Swimming Carnival At Rotorua
LOCAL SWIMMERS TAKE PART JUNIORS AND INTERMEDIATES TO THE FORE A contingent o'f Ipcal swimmers took part in the Okinemutu and Whakarewarowa Amateur Swimming Club’s combined carnival in the Blue Baths, Rotorua, on Saturday evening, 'and enjoyed considerable success, mainly in the junior events. The carnival went off very smoothly, and although many races were evenly contested 1 lie handicapping in several events, put some swimmers out of any hope of winning their events'. ■
In the junior girls’ 33 1.3 yards handicap event, Dawn Kensington aild Winsome Donovan gained first places in their respective heats, while in the final Dawn swam well to. finish first with Winsome second.
Henry Webber won his heat in the junior boys’ 33 1.3 yards handicap race, but failed to gain a place in the final, being only fourth. In the intermediate girls’ 50 yards event, Jill Carpenter was third in her heat. .
The intermediate boys’ 66 2/3 yards handicap event saw .some good swimming with local competitors to the fori*. Jim Butler and Warwick Williams were first in their heats while Mitcliy Grafas Ray Prior and David Basham gained second and third placings in their respective heats. In the final, which was very close, Prior took the honours with Williams and Butler filling the second and third placings. The, Whakarewai ewa team added further glory to themselves in winning the Mikaere Shield relay race. Te Puke was third. Whaka has now won the three races for this shield during the present season. In the inter-club relay of 133 1 3 yards, Te Pilke was second.
