137 'TRAINING THIS YEAR ( hie im ndred and Ili irl y-,seven ex-servicemen have commenced the first courses of this year at Massey Agricultural College, under (lie Rehabilitation Board’s schemes. The number of ex-ser-vicemen at fire College is only about ‘dO short of the total of civilian students, nearly half of whom are .in flu 1 second year of I loir courses, The number {riven' tuition this year will. greatly exceed the civilian total, owing to several ex-servicemen’s courses following in sequence and each lasting only nine or 18 weeks.. Tn contrast to last year, the number of ex-serviceimm destined for sheep farming 159) almost equals that for dairy farming ./GO) and exceeds that for horticulture (18). Ex-servicemen outnumber firstyear civilian students by nearly two to one, thlc civilian enrolments able to be accepted for the first year of the sheep-farming course being 41. for dairy-fann-ing’ 22. and for horticulture Tt. lu addition, the rual cadets being trained tuple’ the Government scheme number 17. Gnly 10 v<>ung women ( horticulture 9, sheep-farming 1) have been aide to be accepted this year. Stud Poultry For China Along with tin' 1000 sheep and 400 pedigree cattle shipped from .New /calami 'for' China have gone 20 purebred Rhode Island cockerels and pullets from Masosy Agricultural College. These birds, ii'dered by the Chinese Governnent through the .New Zealand Department of Agricult tire, have been loaded in the 7000'ton A merica n steamer, Lindenw nod Victory. Gn the voyage the poultry will be under the charge of Mr Ken Chnv, a Chinese student from Massey College, who is. returning to his-homeland to act as an agricultural instructor. Shcepfarmcrs’ Gatherings Reinstatement of the annual gatherings of sheepfaliners which were held for nine years prior to 1911 at Massey Agricultural College, is proposed as a result of requests from the main sheepfarming districts of the North Island. Tt is expected that the commit lee of fanners and members of the -College staff, who are responsible for arrangements for the gathering, will shortly decide tfpon dates for what in the past lms been a three-day session.
