CAUSE OF ACCIDENTS SURVEY BY MINISTER ()i TRANSPORT Some interesting facts concerning traffic accidents during the year ended 31st March last were released by the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, today. : v “The.most frequent type of fatal accident was the collision between a pedestrian and a motor-cycle,’’ said Mr. Semple. “In the towns, this type or accident represented 36 per ccut of all the fatalities, while collisions of motorvehicles with bicyclists accounted for another 22 per cent." Even on country highways, the pedestrian accidents made up 17 per cent, of all the fatalities.” Considering both fatal and non-fatal accidents, however, the most numerous type was the collision between two motor-vehicles, accounting for 34 per cent of the total, said the Minister. During the year there were 861 personal injury collisions in built-up areas, compared with 626 on rural roads. There were 869 bicycle accidents and 748 pedestrian accidents in built-up areas compared with 123 and 131 on rural roads. “Off the road” accidents were more common in rural districts »"d tended to be more serious than collisions between motor-vehicles.
