ESTIMATES LAID BEFORE HOUSE
£4,281,000 FOR RAILWAYS
The Public Works Estimates, which were laid on the table of the House on Tuesday afternoon bv the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, probide for a total expenditure of £19,188,065. The Main Highways account, which is the largest separate item, provides for a total expenditure of £5,037,200. The principal items of expenditure are railway construction of £1,440,000, railway improvements and additions to open lines £2,844,000, public building £1,5000,000 and roads, etc., £1,410,000. Included in the estimates are the following items relating to main highways In the district, and works in Te Puke and Tauranga boroughs, and county:— Police Stations: Tauranga £150; Tauranga (residence) £I,OOO. Post and Telegraph: Tauranga £18,750; Tauranga (storage site) £1,000; Te Puke (residence) £I,BOO. Land Improvements: Mt. Maunganui (water supply) [£l for £3] £1,000; Orini Stream (flood gate) £450; Waioho Stream (improvements) £7O. Main Highways; No. 3 District Construction and Improvements £185,000; Renewals £14,000; Maintenance agd repairs £IOO,OOO.
