Children’s Generosity

Last Tuesday afternoon the Mayor received the following letter, together with a little parcel bulging with coins of the realm: “Pukehina Native School, R.M.D., Te Puke, Ist June, 1937.• The Mayor of Te Puke, Te Puke. Dear Sir, Our Red Cross Circle noticed your appeal in the columns of “The Te Puke Times,” to raise money to help “The King George V. Memorial Fund,” so we decided to have a “Bring and Buy” stall, for pupils only, at our school today and see. what we could do. A parent very kindly donated ten shillings to assist our cause so you can imagine how pleased We all were to start the sale with so much in hand. ; We have asked our teacher, Mr Sparks, to hand to you this letter and the sum of £l 16s 6d, being the amount raised. Hoping this will help along your fund, lam, Yours sincerely, STANLEY NGAWHIKA, Vice-President Pukehina Junior Red Cross Circle.'’ The accompanying coins clearly indicated that the Pukehina children had brought in their own private wealth as contributions, and the action of these children is a touching lesson to adults in publicspirited generosity, The Mayor 1 has Sent a special acknowledgment as tinder;— “2nd June, 1937,

Master Stanley Ngawhika, ■ Vice-President Pukehina Junior Red Cross Circle, Pukehina Native School, R.M.D., Te Puke. Dear Stanley, King George V. Memorial Fund. It is a very long time since a letter gave me as much .pleasure as did yours of' yesterday’s date. This spontaneous response on the part of sorpe of my little Maori and Pakeha friends is splendid indeed, and l am sure that your elders will be proud of what their children have done.

I have not hitherto given any of the other contribute) ies to the b und a special acknowledgment of their subscriptions; but in this case I must do so.

Will you please convey to all the members of your Circle my great thanks. Perhaps Mr Sparks will oblige by reading this letter to the whole school. Yours very sincerely, Bex Keys, Mayor.” Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure For Children’s Hanking Oongh.
