Maketu 11 v. Matakana 27
Fast open play throughout an interest!? g game between Ma ketu | (blu-) of the Te Puke Union, and Matakana (black and white) of the Tauranga Union, was witnessed on Saturday last on the local ground, by a fair number of enthusiasts, Matakana won the toss and Maketu kicked off, Infringements gave the visitors several opportunites in the first few minutes, but Wickliffe checked a determined rush in a dangerous position, removing play to the white 25. The whites again set up a solid attack, but the blues defended stubbornly and eventually removed play’ back to the white’s line, where the blue forwards took a hand. Their endeavours to cross were unavail ing, a long kick by the visitors removing the danger. After a tussle in blue territory Potaka saved with a good line kick From the thrown-in the blues took the ball to their opponents’ line, Ainsley relieving with a wellplaced line kick. From the lineout the whites seoured and started a fine passing rush, the ball going to Ngatai, who crossed the line. The kiok failed. Matakana 3, Maketu 0. Fast play followed the kick-off, the blues striving hard to equalise. A free kick , from a good position gave Morgan a chance and he made no mistake. Matakana 3, Maketu 3. Shortly afterwards Richmond got ' away but was thrown out in the ; whites’ 25. The blues gained position and Corbett got away, ; and passing to Moses the latter went over for Makelu’s first try. Morgan converted Matakana 3, Maketu 8. Clever passing by £he Matakana backs soon had tbe blues in trouble and from a free kick Matakana added to the score. The first half terminated with the soores Matakana 6 ; Maketu 8 From the kick out the whites forced the locd team back to their line and from loose play Davis scored. The try was unConvert ed. 9—B. A fine passing rush t,aw RdUhinga, the winger, touch down for Matakana but the kick at goal again failed making the score 12—8 The blues were now striving hard to equalise with Moses and Potaki making strong dashes but the defence was too strong After a couple of penalties Rauhinga secured from the loose and dived over in .the far corner to bring the figures up to 15—8. Murray, who was playing a fine loose game secured another try to make the score 18-8. The blues launch ad attack after at tack but did not have the fiuisb to cross the line and it seemed that the visitors were too good for them. After a few minutes hard play Sanders crossed the line making it 21—-8. Play went baok and forth from 25 to 25 with good defensive play on both sides and after a long run by Pio and Kiugi saw the latter bring the score up to 24—8. Fisher and Moses made a long run from inside their 25 and Fisher, who was being foroed to the sid@ line, dived over to soora for Maketu. The try was unoonv*r;ed 24-11, With only a few minutes to go the visitors were fighting hard in the home 15. and Ngaboi finding an opening, went through and finalised the soobe as 2?—11, Papamoa*!)flitecj v ftangluru This gime was fast and hard fought from the start, with very little difference in the two teams. The result was a win for Papa-moa-United by 11 points to 9. The points for Papamoa-Uoited were made up of an unconverted try l.y W. Webber, a try by Lipsey, converted by Kingi and a penalty kiok by KiDgi, Rangiuru’s points were three unconverted tries by Richmond* Wihapk a d N, VYhare.
