Meeting of Borough Council
A meeting of the Borough Coun- > ell was held on Friday, April 26th, ' there being present the Mayor ■ (Mr H. O. Cooney) arid Crs F. j Bcs.tock, J- Persey, F. Palmer. J. j P. Ryan, G. Sweetman and J. A. j Jamieson. Foreman H. Lowe was also present. In accordance with section 25 of the Municipal Corporations Act 1935, tho Mayor made a declaration in the presence of the Council in the form presented by the Second Schedule to the Act, and in accordance with Section 41 of Act Similar declarations were made by all six Councillors, On the motion of the Mayor it was decided that the permanent staff of the old Board be appointed to the positions held respectively under the old Board on the same terms and conditions. / It was further decided that the Bank of Now Zaaland continue to be the Council’s bankers. The Town Clerk was authorised to obtain designs for a Common Seal. ■ The minutes of the ordinary and special meetings held previously were read and confirmed. A letter was read from the Labour Department, Auckland, giving a list of men who could be employed by the Board on approved No. 5 work, together with a list of such works.
A. relief worker, I. Watson, waited on the Board and gave a statement as to why he was prevented from going into Camp.— It was decided that the Minister of Unemployment be communicated with on the matter.
The District Engineer, Public Works Department, wrote in reply to the Board’s enquiries as to the possibility of procuring a truok through the Main Highways Board and stated the procedure to be followed.—lt was decided that consideration be deferred.
The County Inspector, Mr I. J Day, wrote advising that the saleyards of the N.Z Loan and Mercantile Co. would need to be cleared up before re-registration could be approved. A letter was received from the Bay of Plenty Dairy Association accepting the Council’s offer of £250 per annum for a supply. An application was received from Mr G. Carmel! for a renewal of his grazing licence of Rugby Park for six months from May Ist and for a reduction in the fee to £7. It was decided that a renewal be granted, the fee to be reduced to £7 for the winter period,
On the motion of Or Sweetman it was decided that the 10 per cent penalty be sdded to all rates for the year ended March 31st 1935, not paid on or before 30fch Septem ber.
A verbal application for his ap pointmenfc as night watchman was received from A. Benjamin.Considerafcion of the application was deferred pending receipt of particulars of his employment during the past seven years with references. No action was taken with regard to applications from J. C. Hicks and C. Rhodes for a reduction of fees for billiard saloon licenses.
On the motion of Cf Sweetnun it was decided that the foreman inspect the road in front of T. D. Wills business premises and prepare an estimate of the cost of improving same.
The following Works Committee was appointed YCrs Bostock (Chairman), Palmer, Perring, Jamieson, Ryan and Sweetman. The personnel of all other committees of the old Board was upaltered.
The Mayor moved and Cr Persey seconded that the matter of opening up the new stock route and provision of suitable direction boards be left to the Works Committee with power to act,— Carried.
