Launching of the big Cunard Liner

Successfully Carried Out THEIR MAJESTIES PRESENT L’stenersHn last night to the radio received a most graphic account of the launching of the world’s biggest ship, No. 534. At 10 minutes past 6 (New Zealand time) Her Majesty pressed three buttons and the great ves ß el ran smoothly down the slipway to the water, landing on an even keel. The noise of the drag chains weighing 2500 tons was like continuous thunder. In order to provide space on the opposite side of the river 5£ acres of land had been excavated. Fears of a tidal wave as the vessel struck the water were unfounded, although thousands of people had assembled on the heights in the vicinity in the event of any such untoward happening. The vessel was christened the “Queen Mary.”
