Athletic Sports

A Successful Meeting The annual Sports Meeting of the v Fe Puke Athletic Club was held on the local football ground on Wednesday and proved one of the most successful gatherings ever held in Ta Puke. The weather was all that could be desired, there was a very large attendance of spectators, and the various events on the programme were keenly contested. The majority of the competitors came from outside districts and they naturally carried off the bulk of the prize money. Some very close finishes were witnessed in the flat races and the cycling events created great excitement. The chops are always very popular and the presence of a number of noted axemen added to the interest. The innovation of a steer-riding contest was a decided attraction and is likely to be a feature of future sports gatherings. Prominent amongst a group of hard-working officials might be mentioned the President (Mr J. McKenzie), the Secretary (Mr R. Warner), Starter (Mr Jamieson), Messrs Guv and Kelly who supervised the steer-riding contests, Mr McPike who was in charge of the chopping and Mr Lander who acted as referee in the cycling and running events. The arrangements! for the day were admirable and reflected great credit on the Club, very favourable comments being passed on the manner in which the sports were conducted.
