Visit of Dominion President
Miss Jerome Spencer,Dominion President and founder of the Women’s Institute movement, who has recently been paying a visit to the Bay of Plenty has had a very busy time since her arrival in this district. As noti fied in our last issue she met members of the committee of the Te Puke Institute at Mrs Mutton’s residence, on Thursday evening last. After leaving Te Puke on Friday morning, she paid visits to Hairini, Oraokoroa and Whakamaramara, where Institutes were formed at eaoh place. This ocoupied the whole day and in the evening another Institute was formed at Gate Pa.
Oq Saturday morning a school of instruction for officers and organisers was held at the Theatre Royal, Tauranga, where Miss Spencer imparted a fund of information to those in attendance.
In the afternoon the visitor was welcomed by Mr B. C. Robbins, the Mayor, and was presented with a bouquet by Mrs Robbins. She then gave a most interesting leoture on Institute works. Short addresses were also given by Mesdames Morton (Papamoa), Crowley (Te Puke), Kirk (Omoko* roa), Phillips (Whakamararaara), Rowsell (Hairini), Peterson (The Mount) and Baker (Gate Pa). The following resolution was moved by Mrs Jones, (seconded by Mrs Morton and carried : “That this meeting of members of the Women’s Institutes, has the greatest confidence in Miss Spencer as their leader and assures her of their unswerving loyalty and hearty co-operation in their work."
Afternoon tea served by members. of the Tauranga Institute, brought a very pleasant funotion to a close.
