Maketu School Concert And Dance

On Friday evening last there was at lease one place in New Zealand where depression could not raise his ugly head. This was at Maketu where a school concert and dance was being held. The large hall was packed to capacitv, while cheerfulness and good humour prevailed as testified to by the whole-hearted and prolonged applause that greeted the various items. The following programme was gone through without a hitch National Anthem

1 (a) "See Our Oars.” School (b) “Johnny come down to Hilo.” Seniors ; 2 “I See You.’’ Primers ; 3 “Hula,” Lily Moko and Clester Tapsell ; 4 “In the Fashion,” Bitty Wickcliffe ; 5 "Brighton Camp'’ (dance) Seniors; 6 “Hear the Echoes,” Seniors; 7 "Ten Little Nigger Boys.” Maori Primers ; 8 Recitation, "Old Jack Frost” Lena Moses ; 9 "E Pari Ra,” Senior Girls ; 10 "Hare and Tortoise,” (dialogue) Pahiriko Rolleston and William Ringer; 11 "Poi Song,” Senior Girls ; 12 Duet "W’hora are You Going to,” Bes sie Rolleston and Anzac Tapsell ; 13 "Tip Toe Song,” Primers ; 14 "Sellinger’s Round,” (dance) Senior Girls 15 "Golden Boat Song,” P. 3 and Std. 1 Girls ; 16 Closing Chorus, "Po ata Rau,” School; 17 "Haka„, Senior Boys. In a programme where every item was a pronounced success it would be invidious to attempt distinctions, yet the "Ten Little Nigger Boys," "Hula” and“Haka” deserve special mention as these items were encored again and again. At the conclusion of the concert the Chairman of the School Committee (Mr J. Nielson) in a few well chosen words thanked the vast audience, who braved the elements and so helped swell the school funds. He also thanked the teachers and all who in anyway added to the entertain* ment.

After a delicions supper, supervised by Mrs Ringer, who was ably assisted by the ladies of the district, was partaken of, dancing held sway.

The ever popular M.C. (Mr Mutu Moses) excelled himself on this occasion and c°rtainly succeeded in making those present into a happy family. The various dances interspersed with items by Pakebas and Maoris, were eagerly entered into, the most popular being a balloon waltz won by Miss Sarah Tapsell and Mr Jack O’Brien and a Monte Carlo waltz won by Mis-s J. Stonehouse and Mr Eri Moses. The success of the dance was due in no small measure to Mr Corbett’s Orchestra, and altogether the night was described as the most enjoyable ever known in the district. -
