A farewell social is to be tendered to Mr and Mrs Lewis, of Paengaroa, to-morrow night. Tenders are invited by the Bay of Plenty Dairy Association for cream carting in the Matata district.

A meeting of all interested in the formation of a second Hockey Club in Te Puke will be held in the Supper-room of the Alliance Hall to-morrow (Wednesday) at 7.30 p.m. We give a reminder of the cooking demonstration to take place in McDowell’s Hall on Thursday afternoon, when visitors will be made acquainted with the many virtues of the Moffat range. Mails for Cook Islands, Tahiti, Canada, North America, West Indies, Great Britain, Ireland, and Continent of Europe, via San Francisco, will close at Te Puke at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 23. Mr C. 11. Clinkard has been elected to represent' the Borough of Rotorua on the Tauranga Harbour Board, whilst Mr J. G. Green has been elected to represent the Tauranga Borough on the same body. There were no other candidates.

The municipal elections will be held in the various Boroughs and Cities throughout the Dominion to-morrow. For the Rotorua Mayoralty Messrs W. A. Carter and Thos. McDowell have been nominated ; for the Tauranga Mayoralty the candidates are Messrs B. Dive and A. F. Tunks. The burial ground of the late Sir James Carroll, half ah acre in extent, is now.being levelled off, It is.to bo planted in Native bush, the intention being to plant one of each variety of Native flora from the tiniest shrub to the giant totara. This should add considerably to the beautification of tho surroundings. The tender of W, Newman has been accepted by the Bay of Plenty Dairy Association for the cartage of cream on the Paengaroa Road. In our report of the tenders previously aocepted by the Association the name of A. Grey appeared as the successful tenderer tor the No. 1 and 2 roads. This should have read H. S. Guy. As a result of the activity of the Cambridge District School Committee, the postmaster now visits the school once a month for the purpose of opening P.O. Savings Banks accounts. A meeting of the Te Puke branch of the,Farmers’ Union will be held in the Town Board office next Saturday night in order to receive a report from MrC. Bailey who represented the branch at tbs conference held in Auckland last week on the proposal to form a Land Settlement and Development also, to appoint to wait on the Hon. IC, S. Williams, Minister for Public Works, when he visits Te Puke next week.

A Very painful accident occurred at a quarry on Mr George Thomas property, Te Matai, at the beginning of the week when Mr Bert Carter, a workman employed by Mr Donaldson, a contractor of Rotorua, in getting metal from the quarry, had two of his fingers biown off and his thumb badly injured through a detonator exploding. The sufferer was taken through to Rotorua, where his injuries were attended to by Dr Bertram.

The remainder of the present year should be a busy one so far as meteorological happenings are concerned. On June 29 there will bo a total eclipse of the sun. A fortnight prior to this there will bo a total eclipse of the moon, commencing at 5.4 p.iu,, and reaching totality at 7.45 pm. There will be a partial eclipse of the sun on December 24. The planet Mercury will pass across the face of tlm sun oft November Kb but as the Period of transit 1 will commence at 5 p.m,, it will fcnt he Visible to the naked eye.

Mr F. R. Howard, sight testing specialist, representing Messrs Barry & Beale, Ltd., of 322 Queen Street, Auckland, will attend at the Alliance Hall on Tuesday, April 26th.* The Hon. K. S. Williams, Minister for Public Works, is to be in Whakatane on Monday next, Anzac Day. He is to communicate with Mr H. W. Earp, Town Clerk, as to the date and time of his arrival in Te Puke.

In consequence of the retirement on superannuation of. Mr Willcox, head gardener at the Government gardens, Rotorua, Mr A. Hesketh, head gardener at Te Aroha, has been appointed to succeed him. Mr J. H. Powell, of the Rotorua staff, will succeed Mr Hesketh at Te Aroha. There are indications of a revival in the West Coast timber trade. It is stated that one sawmilling firm has received big orders, aggregating over half a million feet, from Australia for white pine. Though this may be only a temporary improvement, it is hoped that it indicates a permanent revival of the white pine trade.
