OPENING THE CAMPAIGN. « . • ~ ■' • • A start was made on. Wednesday night with the Queen Carnival campaign, meetings of the supporters of the western and north eastern Queen candidates being held. The attendance at each meeting was only moderate. Prior to the business of electing committees being proceeded with. Mr Cooney, chairman of the Centra! Committee, members of which were present, addressed those in attendance at each hall, pointing out that the object for which the Carnival was inaugurated was mainly to raise funds for the genlargement and improvement of the High School grounds. He emphasised the necessity of having adequate playgrounds for the children, and dwelt on the importance of fos tering and supporting an educacational insiititution such as a High School. The Central Committee proposed that money should be raised by the sale of 2s tickets and various entertainments. The sale of tickets would not commence, however, until after the school holidays, which commenced on Friday next and would last a fortnight, but entertainments could be organised at once. Three weeks would be allowed for the campaign from the time the Schools re-opened. After Mr Cooney’s explanation members of the Central Committee withdrew, and the two bodies of supporters, one in the Alliance and the other in McDowell’s Hall, proceeded with the election of officers and arrangemen ts for the campaign.
For the western side Mr A. B. Motgaard was appointed chairman and Mr C. Wilding secretary, and the following gentlemen, with their wives, were appointed a committee Messrs J McDonald. J. Brown, L. Harris, R. Urquhart, H. Cuff, A, Gordon, D. Sinclair, H. 0. Knight, F. Bustock, J. Bersey, A. Walker, E. Sharp, F. Woods, A. Budd, G. Sweet-naan,- J. W. Riddell, C. Anderson, C Perriog. A J. Petrie, H. Washer, Allen, Rev. Chapman. —ls was decided to initiate the campaign with a dance to be held iu the Alliance Hall on Monday evening next. Butcher, Cottrell, G W. Brown, G. Johnston, T. E. Palmer, ShermaD, Walsh, McEwea, Garvey, Carpenter, Cashmore, Pilcher, Ryburn, R Bell, Fox, Wilkins, Danvers, Warner, F. Palmer, J. Jamieson, Miss King.-It was decided to hold a Paddy’s- Market in the street on the day the schools reopen, and to hoid a children’s dance on a date to be arranged. It was also decided to hold a meeting the week prior to the schools re-assembling to arrange for a continuous programme of events.
