The football match played at Whakatane on Saturday between teams representing the Te- Puke and Whakatane Unions, resulted in a win for the latter by 17 points to 9. The game was very evenly contested, the visiting backs being rather better than their opponents, but the home forwards neutralised this advantage by their play on the line out and on the loose. The winners’ score was made up of three tries (one converted); and two penalty goals, and the losers of one try and two penalty goals. Mr Shaw of Whakatane, was a strict, but impartial, referee. The match was played in the friendliest spirit, and the Te Puke players were most hospitably treated.
