COUNTY ROADS
IN THE TE PUKE AND MAKETU RIDINGS.
At the meeting of the Tauranga County Council last week, the engineer. Mr J. R. Page, submitted the following report on road and bridge works in the two local ridings Te Puke.
Extensive repairs have been carried out on the Manoeka road bj/ local residents.
In exercise of a £ for £ authorority for the Gold mines road sufficient metal has been ordered and delivered to link up metalling near Mr Alexander’s residence, and this is being carried out. Timber for the new platform bridge over the drain on the Papamoa beach road has been delivered during the last few days, and will be used at an early date. The main Tauranga-Te Puke road has been repaired in many places, the flat at the Te Puke end of the Long swamp being rounded up with the grader.
Maketu
The metalling between Maketu crossing and Paengaroa village on the main road has been linked up and completed. On the Te Puke-Maketu road side tracks have been cleared and opened. Extensive repairs have been carried out on the Matai road by a party of settlers. The clay-pit near the TumuKaituna road has been fenced, and repairs have been made to various mainland district roads.
With reference to the road through Edgar Smith’s estate, a dangerous bridge has been replaced with a strong temporary structure, and I have taken the necessary levels and prepared plans for the construction of the road and new bridges as per your instructions of last meeting. After going into the matter closely, however, I found that the work could not be done this season without a risk, through bad weather, .of blocking up the road altogether for a period. It is obvious that the present partlyformed track would be broken up in the proceis of making the new road, and lam convinced that the interests of the settlers would be better served by leaving matters as they ate until spring. For this reason I have not called tenders.
The taking of levels along the proposed road from Rangiuru station to junction with Karana road has been completed Earthwork at Pukaingataru deviation, on the Te Puke-Paenga-roa road, has been continued during the month, a 9 the weatheif permitted. The district engineer, nas approved to amend the 11 grades at the Paengaroa end of the deviation, and there is not a great deal of work required ' to! complete formation. '
