THE BUTTER MARKET.
WEDDELL AND CO’S REPORT
Tfie following table taken from Messrs W.Weddel, and cabled advices during the month will show the trend of the London market: May 6th. (Extremely slow) . Danish, 190 sto 200 s / -Dadisli; 192 s to: 198 s. New Zealand, 194 s to 1965. Australian, 186 s to 190 s. Argentine, 160 s to 170 s. May 20th. (Market steady for choice quality) Danish, 208 s to 2125. New Zealand, 192 s to 1965. Australian, 182 s to 190 s. Argentine, 160 s to 1645. Oh May '27th Danish was qiioted at 210 s to 2165, and New Zealand at 194 s to 200 s, market steady. Continental demand for Danish increasing. In spite of the sensational drop of 70s per cwt., we do not think that the butter producers need be unduly pessimistic, as with cheaper butter the consumption will be greater, and there is more possibility that the stocks in the United Kingdom will be cleared before our next season’s make reaches the market, while the fact that Danish butter has fallen to a level at which Germany and other continental nations are able to buy is bound to ensure an increased demand, Again, the butter factories are assured of a fair price for all butter consumed in New Zealand during the winter, so we feel that it is better that prices should have fallen now when the season’s make has already been disposed of at a satisfactory figure, rather than later when the new season’s make is just coming on the market. The shipments of dairy produce during May were as follows : Boxes, of butter. 64,532 ; crates of cheese, 72,205. These quantities are c'onsiderjably under our estimate, but this is accounted for by the accident to the Whakatane preventing her leaving with 30,000 boxes of butter and 11,000 crates .of cheese, also by other sailings being postponed. • During June the remaining Btocks of butter will be shipped, and we estimate that the cheese shipments will amount to 100,000 crates, and further that all cheese stocks should be cleared by the end of July. : >
