THE TE MATAI ROAD.
A COUNTERPETITION,
The following petition, signed by Messrs J. R. McGee, W. C. Wright, G. Thomas, T. Jenkins, W. Murray, S. Dixon, E. Murray, L. A. Murray, S. Sergeant, F. G. Carson, J. W. Marshall, J. J. Elwiri, J. S. Robertson, A. L. Keith, W. T. Nelson, J. Mark, H. Graham, T. H. Tanner, and J. McKee was read at the meeting of the Tauranga County. Council on" Tuesday' last" We, the undersigned residents on the Upper and Lower TeFatai, respectfully pray your Council to reconsider the decision come to at its' last meeting With regard to the work of forming and rounding up the Te' Matai road. We .base our request on the ground that if the road is left till midwinter, it will be almost impassable. Some three or four months ago three small portions of the road between the 26 and 28 mile pegs frere ploughed and rounded up, and after a heavy shower the road was in those places almost axle deep, and this in an exceptionally dry winter. The previous petitioners were concerned with only the first four miles or so of the road, and the best part at that. The present petitioners are interested in anything up to eight miles, but the former have asked your Council to compel the others to trudgemany _ miles through a bog for months in ' the winter. We would > therefore pray that your Council will consider the greatest good for the greatest number, and have the work done in, say February,, when the road will have time to set before the continuous wet weatherlsets in. In reply to Cr Matthews, the Chairman said a petition had to lie on the table for a month. The Council decided to hold over the matter to enable the Riding 1 representatives to look into the question.. .
