LAWN TENNIS.
The Lawn Tennis Association of Australasia has received a challenge from South Africa for the Davis Cup Competition' of 1920. * * • Congratulations. Australia's victory over England for possession of the Davis Cup has been the subject of fraternal congratulations. «■ From America comes the encomium that Australia is rapidly becoming the virtual tonnis land of the world. This indeed is a fine sportsmanlike tribute, coming from a nation whose standard in this particular branch of sport can be described as excellent. The Americans have a kindly regard for Brookes, whom they consider the finest exponent in the world. England, the home of the unsuccessful challengers, has also sent a message of congratulation. * • « Australasian Championships. These tests, though somewhat marred by adverse weather conditions, were a success. Competitors from England, Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania took part. ' * * * Singles. Lieut.-Col. A. R. F. Kingcote, captain of the British Isles team, annexed the Singles. This carries with it the Anthony Wilding Memorial Medal, which has been won for the first time. * * * The Doubles. The honours for this event were gained by Capt. P. O'Harawood and R. V. Thomas, the world's champions, after an exciting struggle against A. H. Lowe (of England) and J. 0. Anderson (of Sydney).
