April s.—Greet Northern St. Leger. June 3.—Great Northern Hurdle Race. June s.—Great Northern SteepleR. E. Brown had no hick with his team, Escaped, General Stephen, and Valley Queen at the Gisborno meeting. Third was the nearest that Mr. Lysnar could get with his new purchase, All Talk, in the Hacing Club Handicap at the G.R.C. Summer gathering. Monocrat is at present on the easy list, having knocked herself while running in the paddock, and had to forego the Hamilton trip. Admieal Advance has joined the jumping division, and in his initial lesson had the 'chaser Jacaranda as sckoolmaster. The big bay gives promise of being useful in this line. The Hamilton Racing Club Annual Meeting opened on Saturday last, and was an unqualified success. The two excursion trains from Auckland arrived, full to overflowing, and had to make provision for those picked up on the way. The fate of the first favourites of late has been in the minority. The handicapper, Mr. F. J. Macmiliemin, again confounded the followers' of the short-priced ones. The following public fancies were defeated: Golden Crazier, Torfrida, Punka, 80-Peep, and Ruatara.

And the following first fancies materialised: Blackmail, Oakleigh, and Arch Salute. The times registered for most of the winning events were good: Ring Lupin registered under 1.1. over five furlongs. Melee left the twelve furlongs behind in the good time of 1.34 3-ss. And Arrowsmith put six furlongs past in 1.13 2-ss. Most of the other times in proportion were on the fast side. It seems problematical when the top line in speculation will be reached. The club had to tack on another £10,679 over last year's handling—big business for a country fixture. It .was quite pleasing to chronicle a win for Mr. W. Cunningham with his recent purchase, Isingarch in the Trial Handicap. Mr. T. J. 8.. Stuart came near breaking a long run of outs with the filly Demoisolle, securing second money. The returned soldier turned out fcke winner of the Glaudelands Handicap, Ring Lupin, in great racing fettle. Mighty Atom's half brother was a. ball of muscle. Mr. A. McDonald's Torfrida, the runner-up, looked in capital nick. Kilbiggau secured third money, Mr. J. G. Duncan's Blackmail held the rest of the juveniles safe in the Tamahere Stakes. Riense and Jolie Princess filled the places. The Hamilton Cup of 1,000 soys went to Mr. G. Stead's gelding Melee, followed home by Punka and First Salute absorbing the place money. The Ellerslie trained horses were never dangerous with the exception of the old Soult gelding Royal Irish, who put in a good run up the straight. Oakleigh again gave the other hurdlers a taste of his quality over a short course, leaving the If miles behind in 3.18 3-ss. Among the novices over the battens both Entente and Arab King shaped promisingly. Both should be kept in mind for futures. Pendoon, who has plenty of pace, besides being a bold jximper, appears unlucky—falling; he also met with a mishap shunting, and was unable to face the starter. First Salute's relative, Arch Salute a 3-year-old, was quite equal to downing the opposition in the Karaimi Welter Handicap. The much-boomed and costly English horse, Arrowsmith, handed back a portion of the 3,000 soys paid for him to the owner, Mr. H. W. Brown, by annexing the Cambridge Handicap. Salvaless had a well deserved win in the Hautapu Handicap. The way the Salvadan mare cut down the leaders when she made her run was full of merit. There was quite a surfeit of racing last week. Hamilton, Taranaki, Gisborne, and other meetings all handling big figures on the machines. The Otahuhu Trotting Club Summer Meeting has received capital nominations. The meeting opens on S*#urday, 21st. The Te Aroha Jockey Club's Annual Meeting, scheduled for February the 28th and March will require attention at the hands of horse-owners on Friday next. Rathliu is slowly recovering from the severe fall he received at the Takapuna Jockey Club Meeting last week. The nominations for the eld-time favourite fixture, the Thames Jockey Club Meeting, will require attention on Friday. A very attractive - programme has been issued. The inaugural meeting of the TaLranaki Trotting Club was held last Saturday on the New Plymouth racecourse. The meeting proved successful, althotigh a non-totalisator function.

Korkorita accounted for both the Maiden Handicap and the Inglewood Handicap. Overrate won the Taranaki Trotting Cup, defeating the pacing, horse, Waverley, and was runner-up in the Oka to Handicap. E. Pope trained both Oakleigh and Entente Cordiale, the first and second horses, in the Waimai Hurdle Race on Saturday at the Hamilton R.C. fixture. James Bryce drove the winner, General Link, of the Forbury Cup, on Saturday. The consistent Dean Dillon was the runner up. Stockage third. The Takapuna Jockey 'Club Meeting concluded on Monday last, and was one of the most successful racing functions yet held at this favourite marine suburb. The totalisa'tor was kept busy on both days of the meeting, the grand total for the meeting being £133,----267. Formalin, owned and trained by Mr. H. C. Tonks, broke a run of bad luck by beating a big field and paying a good dividend. The win was very popular. Mr. H. Cotter's Admiral Advance had to put up with another second. The son of Advance has put up quite a number of seconds this season. Oakleigh, who has shown good jumping powers on the training track, has at last managed to win a race for the brothers, 01. and F. Peach. Another horse that has been unlucky, Prince Charlorie, got his name on- the winning list after so many disappointments by annexing the Suburban. First Salute.was equal to downing the rest of the field in the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap, beating Taimai, Tinapai, and Co. Landslide, running as straight as a gun barrel, beat the field pretty easily in the Hobson Handicap. The Pukekohe sportsmen, Messrs. Roulston Bros., scored with War Tank, a gelding of their own breeding, in the Rangitoto Hack Handicap. The breadwinner in E. J. Rae's stable, Tenacious, asserted his staying powers and condition by running away with the Waiwera Hurdles. The Hon. E. W. Alison and Sons still have the breeze of success with them, doing well at the gathering with their select little team of useful racehorses. The Otahuhu Trotting Club have every reason to be satisfied with the way owners have responded with entries for the Summer Meeting. The nominations for the O.T.C Summer gathering tote up to over two hundred and seventy odd. Mr. F. W. Edwards has a fair task set him to bring this number together in the sixteen events. Wednesday last was the day set apart for the ceremony of turning the first sod for the new racing track of the A.T.C.. The Club intends to celebrate the occasion with a dinner, etc., fitting this most momentous occasion. Mr. and Mrs. D. Moraghan received a hearty welcome back by their many friends on their safe return after the best part' of a year's absence, in which they visited many lands, and Mr. Moraghan has come back quite restored to his normal health. Denny informed his racing friende that he thinks little old New Zealand has not much to learn in tne racing line from, the Old Country.

There is another "Richmond" in the field in the trotting line. Te Aroha has scheduled the inaugural fixture for May Ist, on the Te Aroha racecourse. Mr. P. C. Nash will be the moving spirit. Forward Lady is to be given a chance to earn her oats in a new department, and is to undergo a course of schooling over the battens. Hymestra showed a glimpse of his earlier brilliant form by winning a race at the Taranaki Meeting, just concluded. Oak Abbey, Rathlin, and others are brightening up again after the bad run they had at the late Takapuna Jockey Club Summer Meeting.
