POLICE CARNIVAL.

The Athletic Carnival organised by tiie Auckland Police Force in aid ol St. John Ambulance was opened in the Town Hall last night by the Acting-Mayor, Mr. A. J. Entrican. There was a very good attendance, but the object of the Carnival warranted a much bigger house. The "programme was a varied one of athletic and musical items. The principal contest was the tug-of-war, and the first pull brought the old rivals, Southdown No. 1 and Takapuna, together. The teams met in two pulls, and after an exciting contest Southdown just got home. In two pulls Suburbs defeated Railway Workshops. An exciting match resulted in the meeting of Tramways and West End. Of the three pulls two were a tie, and the other one went to Tramways, who thus secured the win. * * * A very interesting exhibition of Ju Jitsu wrestling was given by a squad of police under Senior-Sergt. J. McNamara. The juveniles Barry and Fletcher met in three two-min-ute rounds, and a fast clever, exciting bout resulted in a draw. * * * A humorous boxing bout by the Maoris Pia and Patrick created much amusement. The Natives concluded with a haka and dance. * * * The middle-weight wrestling turn between Fulton and Thompson proved interesting. In the first meeting Fulton secured a fall after six minutes, but the second bout went the full ton minutes, with any advantage to either men. * * * .. Miss Gwynne De Aubney contributed a song, while Miss Rosa Sachs and the Misses Campbell provided dances. $ # <© The attention of all past and present members of the West End Rowing Club is directed to the Club's notice in another column of this issue.
