WEST END CLUB "AT HOME."
The opening "At Home" of the West End Rowing Club will eventuate at the Clubhouse, St. Mary's Bay, on Saturday next, when trial fours for trophies donated by the Patron, Mr. Thos. Peacock, .will be decided. There are fourteen crews participating in the event, which will be rowed in five heats, two semi-finals, and a final, me crews have been training hard during the past fortnight and although they contain many new members—the majority of whom are shaping very we is anticipated that keen racing will be witnessed. During the afternoon, the Italian Orchestra will discourse music, and. afternoon tea will be dispensed by the ladies' committee. The executive extend a hearty invitation to old members, friends, and supporters of the club and rowing enthusiasts. '■• » * The club has how recovered from the loss sustained during the cycloneic gale of March of last year, when all their plant, with the exception of two clinker single sculls, were smashed to matchwood. They included a Best and Best racing four, which could not be replaced. to-day under £100; one clinker racing four ; four clinker fours; one clinker racing convertible double , sculls ; two clinker convertible double sculls; and pleasure boat, besides oars and sculls. These have now been replaced with the exception of the Best and Best four, and the club has. practically recovered again, thanks to the assistance of the many old members and supporters of the club who rallied round to keep the coloxirs flying. * * * With the termination of the war, the majority of the members who were fortunate enough to be spared whilst on active service, have rejoined the club ranks which has greatly been strengthened by the enrolment of many young members, and the active membership to-Klay exceeds the three figure mark, which augurs well for the season. * «. » The club is entertaining its soldier members at a "Welcome Home" Social on the 27th inst. * * * During the past season the club; competed at all the regattas, al-~ though in the earlier stages it was necessary to use the practice boats owing to the non-arrival of the racers These came to hand in time for the Provincial Championships, when the club was successful in annexing five of the thirteen events.
