Lard Hawke, the cricketer, who was captain of the Yorkshire Eleven for some years, and once brought an English team to Australia, has attained the age of 55 years, and has married lately. Since the war has put cricket hors de combat for the present, there is not much left for a bachelor veteran to do but cultivate the connubial graces. Most of the old familiar players of military age are now tossing up googlie bombs to the Germans in Flanders, but what a mighty reception those who survive will get when next they walk out from the pavilion at Lords to renew their happier struggles with the Australians.
