Late Racing.

Prince Soult is back again on the tracks, after a. rest since the P.H.C. meeting. The speedy but erratic son of Soult was just outed by Fionnuala in the Auckland: Welter Handicap at the above gathering. T. W. Price, formerly of Christchurch, is getting a trotting team together. At present he has Black Queen, Alf. McKinney, Puriri, Teddy McKinney, Montana and a couple of maiden pacers under his charge.

A couple of the young trotting stock were suhmittedl to auction last Friday from the Grattan Downs Stud Farm, Manurewa, and although shapely, well bred 1 and good oonditiomed stock they did not receive a bidl that would pay for the service fee. James Bryce, the trotting ownertrainer at Addington, Ohrietchurch, has one of the largest teams of trotters and pacers ia training in the Dominion. The last to join his numerous string is Ursula, owned by Mr W. Abbott. Mr "Remington," the local trotting owner, has Sundial and Flora McKinney being prepared! for this season's trotting under the care of Cliff Malcolm. With the opening race meeting of the season within view at Avondale in September there will be the usual early scramble for the loaves and fishes among the local stables, and a good few of the stables already have their juveniles tuned up for the Avondale Stakes. But as a good number of the young ones are not brought out on the tracks till the afternoon the early morning pressmen have 'had! no chance of ]v.'..ging their merits, not having seen them at the after breakfast session. Ritasea, All Talk, Juenna are the most forward that the writer has seen. Miss Jack and Culriform showed their form at the P.H.C. fixture. This quartette are forward, and can be depended on to a hand m the classic event. Some schooling work took place at headquarters on Tuesday morning. Crispeen and Inspector had a warm up over a. couple of the pony hurdles and them flew five of the big hurdles. The former did not judge his distance as well as usual at the obstacles. Mr Chas. Walker's Maiden Steeplechase candidate Luperin was put over the sodi wall', double jump and the stone wall, fencing carefully, but showing promise. Royal Irish is fining down nicely. He put in a useful circuit on the inner grass in company with Pindoon. The pair circled the track m the fair time of 1.50. The much-discussed Colonel Soult, w|ho has Australian engagements, again worked attractively, running round the sand in company with Hadj in 2.0 2-5. He may leave by the outward Sydney boat, Mr J. A. E. Jackson's Soult geldMarconi fenced much more resolutely than formerly, and led the big chestnut Chaminade over five ot the big schoolers. He seems to jump with confidence with Roach on his back. By the work being put in by the sensational dividend payer at the P H C. fixture, Fionnulla, the mare is intended for one of the Avondale Handicaps. The Spalpeen maa-e pleased the track watchers on ruesday. Ambassador and Captain Lock were given a lesson over the big fences on Monday, clearing the ©od wall, double and stone wall in really fine style. Bluestone, which cost the putters much good bullion at the C.J.C. National gathering, was popped over one of the small hurdles' on Monday, and showed aptitude at the game. Toreador and Hemisphere had a round over the big schooling battens on Tuesday. The former flew the first two at lightning pace. He bad the chestnut in trouble from the jump off.

Little Jack Delaval is coming on nicely The bright bay will be ready for anything his owner may set him, for on Tuesday three-quar-ter pace was bis task on the sand rink. Among the babies the BenaonianLatona. filly Independence was associated with Juanna, and the Carl Rosa-Waiotahi filly in a three-fur-long ejoramble cm the twto-year-old rink, easily holding her two companions quite safe.

M.E. says:—An amusing incident occurred in a hairdtressing shop in town recently. Two ladies, intending to dine in the city and then go on to the ambulance lectures, stayed in the office where one is employed, studying until close upon six o'clock. When they came to the iron gates leading to the main street they found them closed and padlocked. What were they to do ? They banged on the walls of a shop where they saw a light. A man came to the rescue, and invited them to get through a small window at the back of bis shop. At the starting point there was a staircase, and that was all right, but from the window ledge was a good height, with only a short ladder to'" sbep upon. The long limbed lady was all right, by dint of a bit of stretching she reached safety, but the short, plump one got on the window ledge, put down one limb, and then frightened to jump. Two men tried for about ten minutes to bring her to safety. One puled outwards and the other inwards, and an old gentleman sitting in a chair thoroughly enjoyed the display of ankle. At last the victim of much suppressed laughter took courage and jumped, and there being no ill effects, two embarrassed females pursued their way.
