CAP AND JACKET

[Br the Early Bird.]

With the close approach of the Avondale spring fixture, the trainers at headquarters are comniencirig to send their charges along in earnest. Last week was a fairly busy one. ' Inspector and Tenacious, two of E. J. Rae's charges, put in useful schooling over the big hurdles. This pair are getting well seasoned now. Two in the same stable on Saturday, Lady Sabretache and Ambassador, put in two solid circuits over the same timber. The winner of the Liverpool Steeplechase is well. .

Ghaminade and Chime warmed up over a couple of the pony battens, and then circled the big schoolers. The pair are much improved. J. Brady and Hasted were the respective riders 1 .

Mr Lou Harris, the Waikato sportsman, had Toreador at the jumping game last week in company with Monothal and Hiime. The trio jumped' five of the big schooling battens well.

On Saturdlay a dense fog enveloped the course till nine o'clock, but both D. Moraghan's and E. J. Rae's teams were on the tracks doing useful work.

The former had his three three-year-olds, Loyal Arch and two others, doing useful work. The former ha® grown and thickened.

On Saturday, in the thick of the fog. Guiding Way and Castalia ran a circuit of the sand in very fair time. The big black chased the mare right up to the winning post.

Grespeen, in L. Coleman's charge, ran a sand mile at top with his trainer in the saddle. Carrying about 9 stone the big Spalpeen gelding fkwilshed up strongly, and has settled down.

Two of W. Sharpe's changes, Taramia Jack and; Delimaa, are doing nice steady work on the tracks, and are not being unduly hurried.

The two two-year-olds that have engagements in the Avondale Guineas', Juanna (Achilles-Shep-herdess) and All Talk (All BlackWordy Warfare) spurted' two furlongs very fast.

Another two-year-old that is holding hie own j taking the watch as a guide, is Ditased, by Achilles-Aid-een, in J. Chaafe's stable. The filly's stable mate, Gold Lac, won last season, capturing the Avondale Stakes.

Two of F. Stenning's sprinters, Gold Necklet and Soultane, put in a merry half-mile on the sand, the former coming out of the contest with all the credit.

Messrs Waller and Dawson were present to see Taj Mahal and Monojack stride over seven furlongs oh, the sand, but the little chestnut had! too much pace for the Guinea® candidate.

All the available watches were in use when Colonel Soult and Analogue lined up at the seven furlong sand) disc, with little Signo waiting two furlongs further on. The Colonel was quite equal to cleaning up the pair hiandisomely, running a good trial.

Gliiiaslando, wjhich' will probably make the trip to the Marton J.C. meeting, downed the Nationals winner El Gallo and' another from the five furllonge mark, showing a fair amount of pace.

Goldisize, with Barney Chaafe in the saddle, circled: the sand rink at top, and put a good showing as per the tell-tale. Mr J. Walters' horse looks in capital trim.

A. Julian has Delegate looking well. The big browni gelding was given a turn' over the big schooling battens on Saturday morning, acquitting himself well.

Mr McOarty's three-year-old Bun-yan-Scotch Thistile gelding is showing marked 1 improvement of late, and in a sprinting match with Dan Caster down the straight held his own, being a mice mover.

Hemisphere won his first track trial this season on Saturday morning, beating Royal Arch and another, after .a good tussle up the straight. A quartette that would! gladden the hearts of their owners and trainers with a win, Devastation, Brookfield, Ulster and Marconi, put mi useful tasks on the tan and sand rinlcs. Tripoli and l Kitty Bellairs are among the active division again, under their old trainer J. Irwin. The former soon came into form again, and the sturdy little daughter of Obligado-Miss Alice (Kitty Bellaire) is making up leeway after a rest. She started sixteen times last season for two wins and placed five times. The pair credSted their owner with £785 on the season.

The Auckland Trotting Ohib's balance sheet for the season must have been pleasant reading for the members and all coniniected with this useful form of sport.

The New Zealand Trotting Cup closed with twenty-one entries. The Cup is run at tfhe Metropolitan meeting in November, and is worth £2500 and 1 a silver cup, second £500, third £300 and fourth £200.

The weighte for the New Zealand Oup dfuly came to hand in schedule time, and Mr J. E. Hendlry seems to have handled the situation capably. The champion mare Wars-top is in her iproper place at the head of the poll with. 9.5.

The Guineas candidates at Avondale have been kept going at headquarters. Gold Lac, Taj Mahal, Penroe, Lady Paula, Column, Glissando, Analogue and Causeway are all doing useful tasks on the tracks.

Last week the stake earners Ngatoa and Nicomaa- returned home from Riccarton, likewise Nimblefoot and the trotters dive, Prince Rufue and Kirdkiriroa. Golden Glow was left behind till he is fit to be shipped north again, having broken down.

The stud hoirse Salvadan, owned by Mr J. Williamson, died recently. He was American-bred, and got some useful horses in his time, but did not get many chances at the stud.

J. Hewett, stud, groom at the Grattan Down Stud Farm at Manurewa, has severed his connection with the old sjpot, and is acting in the same capacity for Mr Tom Richards at Mangere, .and has charge of the faslhionable-bred Waverley, by Gaflindo-Thelma;.

T. Richards has Normintson, Silver Grid, Lady Child, Ruben, Moujik, Sweet Meat, Gray and another among the active division of trotters and pacers in work at Mangere, the most forward 1 visiting Alexandra Park occasionally.

Mr N. Dicky intends mating Kaween with Robert the Bruce, which ie standing the iseason at Ellerslie in W. Tozer's oare.

W. Percival, the well known crosscountry horseman, leaves shortly for headquarters. Messrs Clem and .Frank Macmanemin have also, enlisted, and leave in the same party. The latter are two sons of Mr F. Macmanemin, the well known Ellerslie trainer.

Mr Alf. Coleman, formerly one of the A.R.C. licensed bookmakers,' has just returned' from a five and a-half months' sojourn in N.S.W. and Victoria. Alf. (prefers Auckland for choice, but says the bread and butter stakes have to be catered for in the best marked?. (Continwed on Page 23.)
