Late Racing.
Two races stand out on their own for punters to exercise their wits and talents—the Ferry Handicap with twenty-four horses nicely handicapped, and the Stewards' Handicap, which has a fieldi of twen-ty-one to wade .through before finding the right pea. The writer's advice to all waverers is to follow the money if in doubt. Last week at Ellerslie there were two sweepstakes for wieldeirs of the walnut of ten live birds each for the local shooters and it was left for a this year's colt, Mr Frank Curtis, who divided. The leading pair grassed every bird out of the ten. This was good shooting, for the first time at the tapes. His career with animate and inanimate birds will be watched with intenset. The total stakes by the A.R.C. for the current year is £41,450, an increase of £5,710. The A.R.C. made a move in the right direction wihen they raised the stakes in Hunt Club events. The chief events are to carry another £50 over the stakes of last season. The Gisborne racing club have received what is probably a record nomination for their summer meeting with two hundred and thirty six. The Auckland horse owners were very sparing with their entries at the G.R.C. summer meeting. Only Self, Castaiia, Waiorewa and Monorail have nominated. Marshal McDonald is down for a couple of engagements at the Gisborne Racing Club's summer gathering, Gisborne Cup and G.R.C. Handicaip. The names of horses in E. J. Rae's stable have been well sprinkled over thei programme in the G.R.O. meeting, contributing nine nominations in tlie sixteen events. Mr H. Hayr's Monorail is down for four events at the Gisborne summer gathering—Gisborne Cup, Parks Stakes, G.R.C. Handicap and Final Handicap. The Northern Wairoa J.C. held their annual race meeting last Saturday with the aid of the totalieator. The totalisator staff handled £2443 10s on the eight events. About 2000 people were present at the old time fixture and some interesting racing took place. The starter handled 44 horses in the seven events. Selection opened the ball with a win in the North Peninsula Handicap beating three others. The Soult gelding followed this up by annexing the Flying Handicap. In the Maiden Plate Nildah was too fleet of foot for his seven other oompanionsi. Nildiah alfeo won the Awakino Stakes from six other starters. Gloy, after his recent Whangarei Cup victory, was the popular vote, and justified the punters' confidence beating his three mates comfortably. Mr W. B. Giesen'e Vladinoy, the runner-up in the Cup to Gloy, had no trouble to beat the ten moderates opposed l to him in the Settlers' Handicap. Mata„an.a. cleaned up the meeting with a win in the Farewell Handicap, downing; four others.
It will be noticed that an inspection parade of the National Reserve by the Officer Commanding the District is called for Friday night at 8 o'clock. Members are requested to wear medals and decorationSi
