CAP AND JACKET

[By the Early Bird.]

H. Olive 'brought his pair, Lady Alwyn and Muthshine up from Gisborne to assist at the Takapuna meeting. Labour Day's usefulness om the race track is considered ended, and she will shortly go to the stud, so report says. Neither La Reina, Bleriot nor Merry Roe paid a visit to the training tracks last week. The latter is reported; to have been galloped on at the C.J.C. meeting. The local horseman, R. Kelly, will have the mount on both Centenary and Dogger Bank at the T.J.C. meeting. Goldsize, on whom J. Buchanan will have the mount at the T.J.C. fixture, put up some useful track work last week which if he reproduces should put his owner on the pay sheet. History may repeat itself. St. Hippo got beaten in the C.J.C. Derby and then won the Auckland Cup with 8.9. Can Reputation repeat with three pounds less. A three-year-old has only won the Auckland Cup five times in 40 years. According to the laws of average the time is nearly due again. Mr Dan Tve's little mare Necktie has a filly foal by Multifid and has recently produced a fine colt to the same horse. The. Takapuna Jockey Club have very bright prospects of a good meeting. Good acceptances for the opening day is promising. Last. week the Ellerslie trainers were keeping their horses right up to the collar. Both Soultane and Gold Necklet in F. Stenning's care galloped attractively at Headquarters. Another pair of stable and'track mates that kept the watch holders busy were Delinda and Signo. They have both done all that F. J. M. has asked them. Still another pair that are generally associated on the rinks are Kitty Bellairs and Tripoli. G. Irwin has not overdone the pair. The condition of Toreador and Bedford, trained 1 by P. Jones, cannot be found) fault with. The latter has made marked improvement since the Avondale meeting. Among the handicap horses W. Mobberley's bonny pair Phosphorous and Devastation have been put through a strict and searching preparation. Mono jack has been bowling along at top and will probably have the services of our crack horseman, B. Deely. He should give a good account of himself. Royal Irish, since his Ellerslie success, has been climbing the hill near Cornwall Park and had a brush up on Saturday but was only permitted to show his brilliancies in patches. Among the babies engaged nothing has been pleasing better than Loyal Arch and Gold Lac. They both put up pleasing essays last week. Soldier and Jolie Fille met on Saturday morning assisted by Plenipotent and Dogger Bank The former came out of the test the most ia-v----oojrable.

Nanette had all the best of Genevivi in a five furlong flutter. Her stable mate Fanitane also clowned Ulster i" a short spin. Gloy has also been putting up some fair sprints alone and in company with Goldsize. He is very well. Blue Garment is doing good strong work again under his old mentor W. Mobherly. The Bluelight gelding soon comes back. Bluei'orm CMoniform-Orange and Blue) is making a forward move in condition and. recently in a rough up held his own with Maui Nina. Mr Dickey is keeping the sisters Kaween and Laverna at good solid work without any swallow catching. The latter seems a bit affected in the wind. Among the jumpers Lady Sabretasche has made a forward move for E. J. Rae, who has been very patient with the daughter of Sabretasche. Lady Olgiva ran six furlongs on Saturday on the sand but seemed a little bit tender after pulling up. Lightning is a two-year-old that shows pace on the tracks. The filly is on the small side but very compact. Glittering Sands put up her best track essay to date on Saturday, running- round! the outer grass in 1.54 4-5. Mr J. D. Kemp's pair Last Call and Plenipotent do not improve as the course watchers would like but some horses gallop naturally and others you have to make. Lura-s, by Euroclydon, which only faced the tapes twice last season with one win is moving along all right at Ellerslie, but stays none too well. Advancer, by Advance, in P. Johnston's stable, is a very fast fencer and should keep our local maidens busy over the timber. He started five times last season without a win. Lady Paula is down for engagement 'at the T.J.C. fixture this week. This filly looks as if she will be served by time. Euse a Guerre and Selection are a speedy pair that seem to have lost the nack of winning. Perhaps the small circuit at Takapuna may suit them. The Avondale trained pair Yankee Doodle and Monorail are both speedy and if in the humour the half brother to Coromandel is very fast, but a bad starter. Glissando is engaged at the Takapuna Meeting and the course should suit this short striding young lad. The weightfe for the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap came to hand promptly and taken as a whole seem to suit the spirit of the local owners. The Otahuhu Trotting Club's spring meeting started! and concluded last week and was an all round success. Good fields, a bumper house, and big tote turnover. One pleasing feature was the success of "Mr Remington's" little mare Sundial. The doctor was met on his return from the U.S.A. with a double win. Mr Tom Price, the ex-Canterbury trotting trainer who has thrown in his lot with Auckland sport, also had a. brace of wins with "VVallace M. and Lord John. On the opening day the Favona Farm stable presided: over by Tom Richards, won with Silver Grid and Ring Capitalist, besides running second with Reuben and third with Lady Child. Bad luck seemed to follow C. Herd. Although he had his team as fit as hands could make them the fickle jade fortune would not smile on him. Fransiaine, Kerione and Kirikiriroa all put up good track essays. (Continued °» P** B 23.)
