AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB'S SPRING MEETING.

On Wednesday next, 16th^October, the Auckland Trotting Club will open the new season with their Spring Meeting, the fixture concluding on Saturday, 19th October. For the first day's racing there is every promise of big fields, and as the quality is there, some first-class sport can be expected. The track is second to none in the Dominion, and during the winter many improvements have been effected at this popular rendezvous.

Another report is going the rounds in the South that The Native has again changed hands.

A half-brother to Surplus is the latest addition to F. McManemin s team at Ellerslie.

P Jones's team has been strengthened by the arrival of two geldings from the Waikato.

The hunter Atawhai has joined the active brigade at Ellerslie. He is again in C. Coleman's stable. A chestnut gelding, Chesterfield, has been placed in W. Gall's charge, and is now a regular attendant on the Ellerslie tracks.

Icel was schooled over the big fences at Ellerslie on Saturday, but the half-brother to Convoy did not make a good showing.

A mare by Cuirassier-Gypsy is being schooled over.the small hurdles at Ellerslie. She is in Walkers stable and for a beginner shapes well. The defeat of Merry Eoe in the Hastings Stakes last week was a severe blow to Aucklanders, who thought she could not be beaten. A good deal of fast work is being indulged in by trainers of trotting horses at Alexandra Part:, and next week's fixture of the A.T.C. promises to be good. The good opinion formed of Hinemanu is being borne out by the daughter of San Fran, who won at both the Hawke's Bay and Napier Park meetings in easy fashion. Cider, the winner of the A.J.C. Derby, was a good performer last season, and he has been the ruling favourite for the blue riband for some weeks past. Allegory, the New Zealand Cup favourite, is improving in his racing at Randwick and is sported to have iun a good race when he finished third in the Trial Stakes on Saturday last. The appeals of "Timi (owner) and C Price (rider) of The Native against their disqualifications m conntction with the C.J. C. Grand National Hurdles are being considered today (Wednesday). Diavolo, who has been very useful amongst hacks, won his first race "i open company on Saturday at Napier, when he carried off the Railway Handicap. He was ridden by the Auckland lightweight, J. O Shea,

The Hawke's Bay sportsman, Mr E. J. Watt, has sold Royal Scotch for 2,000gn5., and Ireland for l.OOOgns.

Chesterfield, a chestnut gelding with four white stockings, has gone into W. Gall's stable to be trained in future.

B. Deeley continues to ride a winner or two in Australia and at the recent Hawkesbury meeting he was first home on Ladies , Man.

King William (late Invader) was operated upon for throat troubles on Monday, by Dr Ring. The gelding had turned " roarer."

Prince Solut may be regarded as an unlikely starter in the New Zealand Cup. There is every chance of his not going to the C..T.C. Spring Meeting.

A noticeable absentee from the Auckland Cup meeting this year will be Soultoria, who is at present running at her owner's place at Pukekohe.

During the Avondale meeting, E. J. Rae purchased a two-year-old, full sister to Bleriot, for 200gns. The youngster is in steady work at Ellerslie.

The Ellerslie light-weight, J. O'Shea, rode Diavolo to victory in the Plying Handicap at Napier Park on Saturday. O'Shea is riding in good form at present.

F. Loomb intends, taking a team comprising Scorch, Sea Pink, and Monorail to,;the Poverty Bay meeting. The horses are to be ridden in their engagements by C. Brown.

The statement that the Auckland horseman, A. J. McFlynn, had gone to Eandwick to ride Black Northern, turns out to be incorrect, and that horseman is still riding work at Ellerelie.

Auckland's champion trotting horse, Mandarine, is said to be going along the right way and unless something unforseen happens he will fulfil his engagement in the New Zealand Trotting Cup.

Lord Chiara is still pottering about on the tracks and has not yet been asked to show his best paces. The gelding is very lightly built and does not give the impression of turning out good.

Bronze was a starter in the Spring Stakes at Randwick on Saturday, but she cut a very poor figure and chased the field home. Bronze will perhaps be brought back to the Dominion in a few days.

The nominations received for the principal events to be decided at the Auckland Racing Club's Spring and Summer meetings are very satisfactory, and matters promise well for record gatherings.

Mr S. P. Mackay, who is reported to have purchased the New Zealand horses Royal Scotch and Ireland, is the Victorian sportsman who won a number of good races with Soulthne a couple of seasons back.

The Auckland Trotting Club s meeting will open at Alexandra Park on Wednesday next, and will conclude on the 'following Saturday. Handicaps for the first day are already published and acceptances for same close on Friday at 9 p.m

The victory of Duke Foote in the A J C. Metropolitan Handicap at ±Candw'ick on Monday would hit the ring hard, as the horse had been a strong favourite for the event for some time past, and during the last month, the race was looked upon as a certainty Jot him.

The Achilles-Stepina colt, Jason, who it is said can muster up great pace, went wrong just prior to the Hastings Stakes. However, Mr E. J. Watt still had the satisfaction of supplying the winner in the Birkenhead-Tat-ters colt, Tatterley.

Lady Medallist's victory in the October Stakes at Flemington on Saturday marked her nineteenth appearance nnder ailfc in the Commonwealth. HeT performances on the other side ot the water include four wins, four Beconds, and two thirds.

Paisano was responsible for a good performance on Saturday, when at Randwick he carried the steadier ot 12 12 and beat a good field in the First Hurdles. Other New Zealanders in Black Northern and John were amongst the starters.

Puringa, who won the South Australian Derby on Saturday, would probably be ridden by the ex-New Zealand iockey T. O'Brien, who has been fairly successful since taking up his residence in Adelaide. In Tattersall's Guineas on September 7, Puringa acted as runner-up to Tadanga, and was considered the letter's most dangerous opponent in the Derby. v
