OUT DOOR SPORTS

[By Harbier.]

MUCH enthusiasm prevailed at the 29th annual meeting of the Auckland Cricket Association, held last Wednesday evening. Mr Fred Earl was in the chair, and in speaking to the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, his remarks were eagerlylistened to.

The election of officers for the coming season has undergone little alteration. The energetic secretary, Mr J. H. Watts, still continues in office, and a worthy officer he has proved. Another capapble officer who was re-elect-ed is Mr Carlton Hay, and the funds of the Association could not be in better hands. The Management Committee is composed of :—Messrs P. White, A. M. Howden, R. B. Lusk, D. Hay, P. J. Melville, E. C. Beale, and Professor Dettman.

The fact of the Association now. hay ; ing acquired Eden Park was the cause for much congratulation, " and it was also explained that playing room would be soon available at the ground at 'Remuera used by the hockeyites.

Considering that the Association had two expensive items last year in the coaching fund and the sending of the rep. team on tour through the Dominion, the management did well m coming out with the debit of .£203. This season the Association do not intend to engage a coach, and with the prospect of many rep. matches, the funds should get a big lift.

A fair amount of discussion was indulged in by a motion brought forth that fourth-grade matches now restrict to one day should be altered to two days. The majority of the delegates were not in favour of the change and the motion was lost.

During the evening the trophies presented by Messrs Earl,-Brett and Howden were handed out to the following: Mr Brett's bat for first-grade batting, Mr Sale, North Shore ; Br Brett s bat for first-grade bowling, Mr Oliff, Darnell DCC; Mr Earl's bat, W. Horspool, Grafton D.C.C. ; Mr Howden s bat, Mr England, Ponsonby D.C.O. ; Mr Earl's bat, A. Osborne, Ponsonby D.C.C.

Altogether the coming season promises to be one of the busiest m the annals of the Association, and besides Plunket Shield matches, we are promised visits from teams from Australia.

Saturday last being a fine day, there were good musters for net practice by members of the local cricket clubs. During the week there is also useful practice indulged in.

The Northern Boxing Association has offered a return match between Dinny Murphy and Lyn Truscott for their carnival on the 28th inst.

Speaking of the match last Friday between Truscott and Murphy, a Wellington paper says : "Truscott, who did all the leading in the early rounds, was always ahead on points. Murphy flattered his supporters by making up some lost ground when the match was more than half over, but in the last three rounds Truscott was superior again. In the thirteenth round the Australian floored Murphy, but the latter, though plainly dazed, came up again immediately. He looked an easy target for Truscott, but the Australian, who no doubt fejt that there were better ways of winning, refrained from giving more punishment, and the whole house cheered his chivalrous action. There was renewed cheering when, two rounds later, he was declared the winner. Up to the last few rounds Murphy seemed the more versatile of the competitors, but towards the close, Truscott opened out with a variety of hits and also exhibited good defence. Over and aboVe this, hia condition proved better than one might have judged from a first glance. Murphy's fail-

xire was no doubt partly due to the xxndue respect with which he treated his much-travelled opponent."

P. Thomas, the City half-back, left for England via San Francisco last Wednesday evening. In the Old Country, Thomas intends to play the League game, and will probably throw in his lot-with the Barrow, a Lancashire club. This promising player should have a successful career in the Old Country.

The committee of the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club met last Friday evening, and discussed the programme for the new season. It was decidede to hold an evening's sport on Monday, Nocember 18th. Two events will be run off—lso yards handicap and one mile handicap. Entries for these events will close on Nocember 13th.

Tehn it was decided to hold the first carnival in the Domain Cricket Ground on Saturday, December 7th.
