RACING FIXTURES

September 11 — Dannevirke R.C. Steeplechase. September 12 and 13 — Ashburton County R.C. September 21, 25 and 28 — Avondale J.C. Spring. September 26 and 27—Geraldine R.C. Spring. September 26 and 28—Wanganui J.C. Spring. The N.Z. Cup candidate Valhalla seems to be in the suspected list for the Cup. The Taranaki Jockey Club have donated towards the North Taranaki Hunt Club funds. Mr Matthews, the owner of Shuja, left by the s.s. Marama to be present at the A.J.C. Spring fixture. Since returning from Christchurch, the Soult gelding Master Theory has been blistered and is spelling. Mr Harry Tinker, the well-known horse dentist, arrived in Auckland last week for his usual business trip. The hurdler John has changed hands and will probably be raced at the A.J.C. Spring Meeting at Randwick. Mr Leicester, of Kaitike, the owner of Miscal (trained in the Fordell stable), was in Auckland last week. Mr W. A. Scott, the Mangere sportsman, purchased the trotting mare, Syiie at auction last week for 95gns. A. Oliver, the N.Z. crack jockey, will steer Mr Highden's team of racers while racing in N.S.W. and Victoria. Mr G. Morse has been appointed handicapper and Mr R. H. Skipworth starter for the Rangitikei Racing Club. Mr A. Robertson, who went to Australia on a health searching mission, recently returned to Auckland, greatly benefited by the trip. The Kilcheran gelding Kilrain is fancied in some quarters for the Marton Handicap. The distance, 1\ miles, may find him out. The writer feels like picking the next Avondale Guineas as best from a quantity and quality point yet decided at the old tryst on the 28th. Continuance was sent to Australia alone. Captain Jingle, who was to have made the trip in his company, was left behind on account of being sore. Rae's pair of Riccarton contestants, Tui Cakobau and La Reina, were both doing medium work on Saturday, looking none the worst for their Southern trip. The sand track has been a boon to trainers during the winter months, and practically all the work has been done there since the A.R.C. Autumn Meeting. Watchchain, who is one of the best track horses at Ellerslie, outed Manurewa from the sfur. mark on the sand. The pair ran the distance in fair time. „ Goldsize is striding along in good style at Ellerslie. On Saturday, with a good hold of his head, Doughboy's brother ran round the sand (9fur.) in 2.2 l-ssec. Flying Soult, who was owned by the late Mr W. J. Bowden, was auctioned last week at Buckland's horse bazaar and realised 65gs. If all right, he must be considered a bargain. Mr J. E. Henrys has declared the handicaps for the Dannevirke R.C, and seems to have struck the happy medium, and owners have little to complain of. The gathering takes place on the 11th inst. On Friday next, September 6th, Mr H. H. Hayr will receive nominations for all events of the Avondale Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, which takes place on Wednesday and Saturday, September 25 and 28. There should be an excellent response.

The Cordon Rouge horse Tobias is still moving a bit cramped on the local tracks. The stallion Gladstone, who is getting racy looking stock, is standing the season at Ellerslie in charge of W. Tozer. C. Price, Mho was disqualified over the Grand National Hurdle Race, has taken a holiday and gone on a visit to Australia. The Auckland Jockey, Ben Deeley, seems to be getting a fair amount of riding round Sydney, but so far, has only scored on one occasion. The last has been seen of Antarctic for some time to come. The big son of Salvadan is to be turned out for a lengthened spell at Wanganui. Ted Cutis has three of his team in Queer Street—Counterfeit, Autumnus and Brown Owl. This is hard luck for the patriarch of New Zealand trainers. Wee Olga is being kept up to the collar after a rest. The double winner at the A.R.C. Autumn fixture scampered round the sand track alone in 2.3 l-ssec. Tlie Celt is steadily improving, and Mr A. Walker may get an early return with the son of Spalpeen. The other morning he was bustled over 4fur. in a tick under 51sec. Mr E. J. Watt's horses, in charge of Mr T. Quinlivan, arrived safely at Sydney. Midnight Sun, Royal Scotch and Theodore should keep up the reputation of Maoriland. Taskmaster, half brother to Masterpiece, has resumed work again at Riccarton under his old mentor. The gelding has been on the shelf for some considerable time. On Saturday the two Avondale Guineas candidates, Prince Soult and Monorail, had a 6fur. bout on the sand. The pair finished together in I.2osec, not ridden out—ia fair gallop. The Waikato Trotting Club is to be resurrected this season. At present the club has .£SO in hand to start the new season. The meeting will be held with or without a permit. Another well-known member of the old racing brigade, T. Quinlivan, senr., has passed over to the great silent majority. He died recently at Wanganui, one year over the allotted span. Word comes from Avondale that Mr Barnaby's consistent Gloy is in splendid condition. He won two out of his fifteen starts last season, running three seconds at the Auckland Winter Meeting. Goodwin Sands seems the only one out of W. Gale's stable that is likely to face the barrier at the Avondale Spring Meeting. Solus is not to be hurried, and Solitudo is still backward. Mr Claude Motion has lost Master Gluten, a three-year-old, who was recently added to the list but died. He gave promise of being useful, and ran 3fur. on the sand one morning in 38 2-ssec. Mr Hawkin's game little Master Wairiki has come into form again and is now galloping freely. In a rough up on Saturday with Antoinette they left 6fur. behind in 1.20 3-5 sec. There are fourteen three-year-olds engaged in the N.Z. Cup, with the poundage ranging from 7st. down to 6.7. If thee is anything among the number approaching first-class form they will nearly win. The first payment for the N.Z. Cup is due on Friday, sth September. As usual, the Auckland owners, with the exception of Mr W. Ring and Messrs Steuart and Foss, have left the big event severely alone. Sphinx, who fell at the Takapuna Spring Meeting, and was not herself afterwards, is now striding along and jumping the battens in good style. On Saturday morning she negotiated five hurdles with a mate. Bellah, one of Mr Lowry's cast-offs, was recently supported for the N.Z. Cup. The Royal Fusilier horse will have to make a vast improvement to win. He only had one winning bracket last season out of fifteen starts. Prince King, who is engaged in the Avondale Guineas, rattled off 6fur on Saturday with a light weight up in I.2osec. The son of Hierarch-Harpist is the most improved horse at headquarters among the thee-year-old division. Tripoli, a maiden three-year-old (Ob-ligado-Cyrenniac), assisted Sea Elf home over the. last 4 of 6fur. on Saturday morning. They finished well within themselves, with heads together.
