Cap and Jacket

By Boz.

Notus is being schooled at Wingatui. Master Dolaval unplaced in Wanganui dip. Porirua died at Masterton last Thursday. The 'chaser Mooltan has been taken up. Ti'uce still holds the record (3min. 2sec.) for tho Wanganui Cup. Lionheart won the Canterbury Handicap at the Canterbury Park Park (Sydney) Meeting last Saturday. From Australian press notes it would appear that Apologue has gone off, his Spring campaign having left its effects. Munjeet v/as a starter in the V.R.C. All Aged Stakes and with Master Foote made the running for the first part, albeit at a slow pace. Miinjeet failed to stay out the finish, and ran out of a place. Trainers will have welcomed the recent rains. The tracks at Ellerslie were about as hard as they well could he. The improved goinc gives a brighter prospect for Easter racing. The placed horses in the "Wanganui Cup— Uhlando, Waitapu and Tangimoana — all came from amongst the light weights. Of the better performed competitors, Marguerite, who finished fifth, was the only one to finish in a forward position. The Grafton colt Peru was fancied by his stable for the Australian Cup. His victory make np for previous disappointments. This colt must be a stout-hearted one, and it is noteworthy that he is the first of his sire's progeny to sc»re over a long distance. The South Auckland Racing Club's Annual Meeting takes place, on Friday and Saturday, 27th and 28th insts. The weights for the first day's racing are to appear on or about to-morrow (Friday), 13th inst., and acceptances will close on the following Friday, 20th inst., at 9 p.m. Peru's time in the Australian Cup — 4.o£ — though 3 sec. short of the record put np by Lord ITllin's Daughter, 3.57J, in 1905, has not been beaten a great many times. In 45 years only five horses have broken 4min.. and we have to go back as far as 1890 for the first of these — Dreadnought, who won in 3.595. The meeting between Mountain King and Antonio in the V.R.C. All Aged Stakes did not come off. The English bred horse was left to combat Ebullition, Munjeet and two others, and appears to have made an easy work of it. Mountain King, reserved for the Loch Plate, drove the rest out, and gave that rarity nowadays — a walk over. Uhlando was little fancied for the Wanganui Cup. That his movements on the track were not thought of much importance can be deduced from the the omission of his name in the late training notes. It is evident from the report of the running that his victory was no fluke, the time recorded, and the strength of the field. In the free betting days, Uhlando's Wanganui Cup victory would have given a glorious skinner to the " books " who betted at the corner, whilst losing punters on Zimmerman, Master Delaval and Co. would have been correspondingly numerous. There is consolation to the ' nunter in the present day in thefact that a benign Government compels him to save his coin for home events, - ;

Elelvation's next effort -will be in the Manawatu Stakes. V '''■■ \ • ■:.. Master Delaval was again beaten at Wanganui on Saturday. Putty finished third in the Place Handicap at v lemington last Saturday. Mr C. F. Mark, who recently met with a somewhat serious accident, is now .about again. Scotland, for a horse troubled with his feet, made good use of them in the Newmarket Handicap. The St. Paul gelding, Dardamis, Avon the Waihi Cup on Saturday, There were only three starters. The Napier Carnival Cup will be run next Tuesday, 17th inst. No Auckland horses are engaged. Prior to the Newmarket Handicap, Scotland rail five furlongs on the Caulfield track in 1.1$ — a record for the track. Ability, the hurdler, has recommenced training work at Riccarton. Doubts are expressed as to his getting through a preparation. The quality of Peru's Australian Cup victory was emphasised last Saturday, when he won the Champion Stakes in romping style. Apologue was runner-up. Gravitation's special mission at Wanganui was the Jackson Memorial Stakes, which he won after a good race by one and a-half lengths from In Rifle, in 1.15 3-5. Grenauier's party,^ who had the bad luck to be just "beaten in the Newmarket Handicap, had a winning turn in the Farewell Handicap last Saturday, the Soult horse winning a good race fairly easy. Apologue appears to have died out of the Australian Cup contest when just over two miles had been covered. Nearing the distance the exAuckland horse made a short-lived effort and then fell back. Uhlando, the Wanganui Cup winner, could only get third in the Wan- V eanui Stakes on Saturday. Marguerite had a winning turn in this event. The Lark being runner-up. The good time of 2.35 2-5 was made. Cachuca was placed third in t the Fordell Hurdles at Wanganui on Saturday. There was a great finish. The Mahaki gelding Maiii rushed things near home, snatching vietorv from Claremont by a neck, with Cachuca close up. Entries close to-morrow (Friday) at 9 p.m. for the following events of the Auckland Racing Club's Autumn Meeting : — Brighton Hurdles, Easter Handicap, St. George's Handicap, Autumn Handicap, and Autumn Steeplechase. A feature of the opening day's racing at the Wanganui Autumn Meeting was the winning form of a trio of Mahaki's descendants — Mahuta, Maui and Ataauhu, who won the Stewards' Handicap, Westmere Hurdles, and Tayforth Hack Hurdles respectively. Satisfactory entries have been received for the Thames Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, to be held on the 21st inst. Country stables are strongly represented, whilst there is a fair number of Auckland- entries. The whole entry erives a good prospect of strong fields. The weights will appear on Wednesday, 18th inst., and acceptances close on Thursday, 19th inst., at 8 p.m. The Annual Race Meteing of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club, a two-days' fixture, takes nlace on the Paeroa racecourse on Tueßdav and Wednesday next, 16th and 17th inst. There is a splendid programme, with good stakes, and good fields and interesting racing are promised. Acceptances for the first day's events close with Mr H. Poland, secretary, Paeroa. at 9 p.m., to-day (Thursday), 12th inst. Jack Smith, by Wallace, created something like a sensation by his i runaway victory at the V.R.C. > Autumn Meeting, the race being run > in time equalling the Australian re- , cord of 2.49 for lm. sfur. The # fast time and easy win, and. the indifferl ent form shown by the Wallace horse - on the preceding day led to a hostile » demonstration on the course, but at *• »n encrairv held at. the instance of Sir - Pupert Clarke, ths explanation pi J the owners was accepted as. satisfactory, .
