THE Ponsonby Croquet Club very pleasantly and successfully concluded their first season with a social gathering in the Ponsonby Hall on Tuesday evening. The earlier portion of the evening was devoted to progressive euchre, and the successful prize-winners were Miss Hetherington and Miss Warnock, Mr Kenny and Mr Seering Matthews. A short programme of dances followed after supper, Mrs Coutts, Misses McDonald, Edwards and others supplying the music. The prizes won during the croquet season were presented by Mr R. \V. Gallaugher to Mrs Hanna and Mrs Burt.

Mrs Burt was dainty in black silk, the bodice relieved with creme ; Mrs Gallaugher wore a handsome dress of brown chifion taffeta trimmed with ecru guipure ; Mrs Massey, black silk ; Mrs W. Arey, black silk ; Mrs C. Rainger was graceful in pale pink, trimmed with velvet and Valenciennes ; Mrs Coutts, claret-coloured gown relieved with creme ; Mrs S. Matthews, creme silk and lace, creme coat ; Mrs Wetherilt, black skirt, dark blue silk blouse ; Mrs Hodgson, handsome black silk gown, the bodice relieved with creme lace and pale blue Bilk ; Miss Mackay wore black, trimmed with handsome guipure ; Miss Billington, black skirt, dainty pale blue taffeta blouse ; Miss U. Billington, pretty white dress over pale pink ; Mrs Matthews, black skirt, pink silk blouse ; her daughters wore pretty light frocks.

Mrs Dickenson, black silk gown, white chiffon scarf ; Miss Warnock, creme ; Mrs C. H. Jones, black srfirt, pale blue silk blouse ; Miss Harris, creme; Miss M. Edwards, pale green dress, and long crerae coat; Miss R. Edwards, white silk ; Miss Wilson, black skirt, pale blue silk blouse ; Miss Faulder, black silk skirt, pink taffeta silk blouse ; Miss M. Faulder, pale green ; Misses Billington, pale blue dresses ; Miss Graham, creme voile ; Miss Batty, black skirt, pretty white silk and lace blouse ; Miss Wright, creme, trimmed with black passementerie ; Miss Henricksen, creme, long red coat.

An enjoyable bridge party was given by Mrs Grimwade at her residence, " Hurstmere," Takapuna, on Friday last, and was attended by a large gathering of Lake residents. Mrs Sharland was the winner of the first prize for ladies, and Mr W. Boak carried off the gentlemen's trophy.

A great deal of interest was occasioned in the Aratapu district on Tuesday, May 14th, by the marriage of Miss Lena Corkill, daughter of Mr W. J. Corkill, to Mr William Francis Johns. The ceremony took place in the Aratapu Methodist Church, in the presence of a large congregation. The Rev. W. Wills officiated, and the service was partly choral, the combined choirs of the Anglican and Methodist churches assisting. The bride was given away by her father, and looked winsome and graceful in a handsome dress of ivory chiffon taffeta, effectively trimmed with silk lace and chifion, and an embroidered tulle veil over a coronet of orange blossoms, and she carried a beautiful shower bouquet. The bridegroom's gift to her was a gold brooch set with rubies and diamonds.

Miss Vera Corkill and Miss W. Johns acted as bridesmaids, both wearing dainty dresses of white silk and lace, smart red hats, and carrying beautiful bouquets of crimson and white flowers and ferns: The! bridegroom presented them with pretty

amethyst and pearl brooches. Mr P. Smith acted as best man, and Mr H. Corkill as groomsman. The Wedding March was performed at the close of the service by Miss J. Hockin. After a sumptuous wedding breakfast, served at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr and Mrs Johns departed for Auckland, en route for Te Aroha, and from thence proceed to their future home at Whangarei. The bride travelled in a smart tailor-made blue cloth costume and pretty brown hat.

The engagement ie announced of Miss Mollie Mathias, eldest daughter of Mr L. Mathias, Christchurch, to Mr Duncan Murchison, of Canterbury.

The marriage of Miss Lilia Sankey of Wark worth, and Mr Lionel Litten* of Port Albert, was quietly solemnized at Mr Fenton's residence, Warkworth, on Wednesday, May 15th. The Key. Mr Evans officiated. The bride wore a pretty pale grey costume, and was attended by Miss H. Vipond, who wore a dainty white silk frock trimmed with lace. Mr G. Stallwortby acted as best man. The bridal party were entertained at afternoon tea, when the best of good wishes were expressed for the future happiness and welfare of the newly- wedded couple.

The marriage of v Miss Annie Nicholson, daughter of Mr Alex. Nicholson, of Huntly, to Mr George Berryman, takes place on Tuesday, June 4th.

The engagement is announced of Miss W. Hunter-Brown, of Nelson, to Mr Theo Harper, formerly of Christchurch, but now engaged as a mining engineer in Siberia.

The marriage of Miss Effie Willis, daughter of the Yen. Archdeacon Willis, of Cambridge, to Mr Lusk, of Auckland, takes place at an early date. The other evening the parishioners and other friends of the bride-elect entertained her at a,gift evening as a farewell. The hall was tastefully decorated, and a dainty supper was provided by the committee of ladies. An excellent programme was gone through, and a guessing competition provided a great deal of amusement, the prize winners being Miss Peake and Mr Selby. A large number of gifts were presented, the table being laden with dainty articles of all descriptions. Mr Wells, on behalf of the committee ? made a neat little speech, in which he showered kind wishes upon the bride-elect. Archdeacon Willis thanked the hosts for their kindness to his daughter.

ErnesC Toy, violinist, is to tour Australia and New Zealand this year. He was the soloist at a recent Bournemouth concert, when he played the A-minor Vieuxtemps' concerto, with the Dan Godfrey orchestra, and was recalled five times.
