BOWLING- SPASMS.

By The DfTCHER,

THE forlorn and disappointed faces of bowlers on Saturday

were a decided study. As the rain continued, a resigned lock took possession of the most sanguine, and home they toddled.

The A.B.A. asked leave of the Devonport Club for the use of their green for Saturday next to present the prizes won at the late tournament. But the wise men on the committee decided against the idea. The only other green available is Ponsonby.

The improvements in progress at Carlton are being pushed on rapidly. Mr Herron, the veteran green-layer, is hard at work in conjunction with J. Kilgour, who finds this work a real labour of love. Between the two, something nice ought to result.

The Mount Eden green looks as good as ever. All the bald spots have disappeared, and great hopes are entertained for the future of this favourite spot.

Epsom have got things well under way for the coming season. The grass looks most sanguine, and busy bees are being inaugurated to keep the weeds down. The croquet lawn has been sewn, and should be playable by 'Xmas.

The game that Mr Thompson gave the Buckles for some five years ago seems to have fallen into decay. It was known as the Diamond Buckles. The contest was intended to promote the drawing game — an alternate short and long head — and the bowls had to be in a taped-out diamond, six feet by six feet. Each side counted according to the number of bowls drawn within the diamond. The A. P. B. A. ought to take up the matter and include the contest in their list of events.

There is talk of a smoke concert coming off in September under the auspices of the A. P. B. A. It would be a fitting wind-up to a tip top season, and any matters discussed for the welfare of bowling could then be brought up at the different club's annual meetings.

The finals of some of the clubs' events are still unfinished. Carlton have a handicap to get oft, and several of the clubs have left their decisions until next year. Why is this thus ?
