BOWLING SPASMS.

By The Ditcher,

WHAT a hot time Ponsonby gare ! Auckland on Saturday ! Thirteen rinks tried conclusions, and only five Auckland teams secured wins — those of Brookes, Gilmour, Perritt ai? i Lambert ; and Eversleigh with his first-year team scored a tie. Handcock, Ledingharn, Mennie, Dean, Easton, James, Holland and Buttle fell like ninepins, and great was the fall thereof. Last year the very opposite occurred, hence the blood of the West Enders was up. Both greens played well, and there were some great strokes, but Ponsonby were not to be denied. All Auckland's dons were in the bout and no excuse could be given for any weakness on that score. The totals were 245 and 213 ; first-year men, 21 each. The palm goes to J. Newell, whose team did all that was asked of them. E. Darby, P. Darby and Stichbury composed the Ponsonby reps', team. Try how Ledingham would, he went down. For Auckland, Perrit had a double score against Tom T^ssher. 18 to 9. Colthurst, Cooke and Culpan did a lot of good work fpr Perritt. Otalmlin are closing up for the season. The green has worn well and the season has been a splendid one for grass. Though the wear and tear has been pretty severe, the sward looked well to the last. Epsom had an afternoon with Onehunga on Saturday, and received a sound spanking. However, a pleasant game was played. President Michaels gave the infants a hearty welcome, and Mr Burton suitably replied. The Onehunga green was closed down on Saturday for top-dressing. The condition of the ground was very creditable to all concerned. Mt. Eden have annexed the Edwin Stars again till next year. They also held them into the last season, Onehunga being the only people to give them a go. Mt. Albert did not «iay the game they nut up against Auckland, Brookes and Co. proving on the day a better four. Priestley and E. It. Allen proved their worth on Saturday at Onehunga. They downed -Michaels and Mclntosh for the handicap nairs. There were no "beg pardons ' r between the skips. The winners won by more than their handicap. Devonport and Remuera had a great tussle for supremacy on Saturday. Devonport topped the score. Broughton and Harvey had wins on their own green. Harvey's team played the game of their lives. Broughton as skip was in his proper place. Eyre had to drag a very medium team through, and for the ' first time this season had a loss. Harrison, playing for Devonport at Kemuera, had one of his freauent losses of the season. 11l luck seems to follow this skii). But it's a long lane that has no turning. The Carlson winter green was formally opened on Saturday. There was a fair attendance and the lawn played very fairly for a first day. Two rinks have been added, but it will not be playable till later. Tomlinson is the proud winner of the Waverley Medal at Richmond. He had it all his own way in the ' final against J. Donald, and deserves his win, having played very consistently and steadily. Vercoe looks very like getting away with the Waihi handicap singles. There are, however, a lot chasing it. Young and Surman had a team each at Auckland. Surman pulled his rink clean away from the smiling Bob. Coleman played a nice p*ame for Surman, and E. H. Whit© was not so slow as second. Epsom meet Auckland on Saturday. The baby ought to get " what for."
