SELDOM has the Academy of Music, Waihi, been the scene of a gayer or more brilliant assemblage than on Friday evening, 6th inst., when, in response to the ball committee's invitation, about 250 people met to " chase the glowing hours with flying feet." The committee, which con^i>ted of Mesdames Barry, Cave, Chapman, Misses Banks, Forster, Haazard, Simmons, and Messrs Anderson, E. W. Cave, Leslie, E. Banks, C. Banks, Howell, Gauvain and Cramer-Roberts (secretary), worked hard to ensure the success of the event, and must have felt gratilied at the result of their efforts. The decorations with flags and Chinese lanterns were very tastefully carried out, and an excellent supper was provided by Mr H. E. Meyer, of the Waihi Hotel. Christian's orchestra supplied capital music.

A wedding of considerable interest to a wide circle of friends took place on Wednesday morning, July 11th, in St. Peter's Church, Hamilton. The contracting couple were Miss Eva Maud Biggs, granddaughter of the late Rev. K. O'Callaghan Biggs (for many years vicar of Hamilton), and Mr Henry Colin Balneavis Shera, of the staff of the Bank ot New Zealand, Hamilton, and son of Mr J. M. Shera, ofKernuera. The church was beautifully decorated, the work having been carried out by girl friends of the happy couple. Out of the large congregation nearly one hundred were invited guests. The Rev. N. C. W. Ratcliiie officiated, assisted by the Rev. T. Fisher, and the service was partly choral.

The bride was given away by her uncle, Mr H. I. Biggs, and looked winsome and charming in a lovely dress of soft white radium silk, the skirt trained and linished with kiltings and full ruched frill. The bodice was made with transparent yoke, and tastefully finished with accordionpleated chifl'on and orange blossoms. She also wore an embroidered tulle veil over a coronet of orange blossoms, and carried a beautiful shower bouquet, the latter the gift of the bridegroom, who also presented her with a gold Nellie Stewart bangle. The bridesmaids were Miss Nellie Shera, sister of the bridegroom, and two tiny cousins, Misses Barbara Wheeler and Betty Jolly. The little girls wore quaint frocks of creme velvet, and had wreaths of violets in their hair, and they carried dainty crooks finished with posies of violets and ribbon. Miss Shera wore a dainty dress of soft white silk with transparent yoke of Irish lace, the full skirt finished with tiny frills ; folded belt of violet silk and touches of violet iinished the bodice ; smart white French felt hat swathed with tucked chiffon, turned up at the back and trimmed with shaded violets and chifton, and her bouquet corresponded.

, The bridegroom's gifts to the bridesmaids were pretty gold brooches. Mr L. M. Shera attended his brother as best man. The Wedding March was 'played by Mrs Bosworth at the close of the service. The bridal party drove to " Opoia I J a," Claudelands, theresi•dence of Mr and Mrs A. B. Wheeler, uncle and aunt of the bride, where they were entertained, and the customary toasts duly honoured in champagne. Mr and Mrs Shera left by train for Auckland, the bride wearing a smart electric blue tailor-made costume (a present from her mother, who is in America), and fur toque trimmed "with clusters of violets. The wedding presents included a handsome clock, presented to Mr Shera by his fellowen>ployees iv the bank.

The engagement is announced of Miss Bertha Hazard, of Ponsonby, to Mr Dyson, of the New Zealand Accident Insurance Company, Auckland.

The first annual ball of the Waitemata Kowing Club, held at the Choral Hall on Friday last, passed off brilliantly. The decorations, chiefly of nautical design, with liberal use of greenery, and the colours of the principal Auckland rowing clubs, were admirably carried out. The guests included the Mayor of Auckland (Mr A. M. Myers,) the President of the Rowing Association (Mr H. A. Marriner), Commander Sharpe and officers from the cable steamer Iris, and Mr W. C. Smith, president of the Waitemata Boating Club. Meredith's full orchestra provided capital music. Such was the success of the gathering that the members of the club and their friends will look forward with eager anticipation to the annual functions of the future.
