MANUKATU.
There is the certainty of a close contest in this electorate. Sir Maurice has held the seat, with the exception of one term, for a great many years.
In fact, it is 42 years since he first won a seat in the House, nnd but for an absence of three years, he has been a member continuously ever since. If the boundaries of the electorate had remained as they were, Sir Maurice's task at this election would probably have been comparatively easy, but with the inclusion of such farming districts as Wairoa South, Otahuhu, and Mangare, which formerly belonged to Franklyn, the issue has been made doubtful. The opposition comes from Mr Kirkbride, who is perhaps the strongest candidate the farming interest could put in the field, and who will have strong support throughout the electorate. This will be one of the hottest fights in the Auckland district.
