When I commenced practice in Auckland in 1885, during a period of intense depression, I reduced medical fees to the medium English rates-those charged to persons whosie incomes are from £ 500 to £200 a year— viz 2/6 for consultations and 5/ for visits, medicine included, and for strict cash only. At these rates I did a large practice. Unfortunately, owing to a very severe attack of influenza, I was obliged to discontinue practice, and when I resumed it, thinking to lessen my work, \ **°P* ea *^c usual rates charged in Auckland. The result has been disastrous. The losses by bad debt's have been greater in proportion than I ever had before, and I have determined to resume the old cash rates. My health will not allow me to take lodge or midwifery practice, nor did I come to Hew Zealand to take such practice, put to continue the consulting practice I had followed for many years. Unfortunately, I found that my University degree of Doctor of Medicine, obtained after two separate examinations, wasof no benefit to me, aB every apothecary dubs himself Doctor.
