Rev. A. Dewdney refused the offer of the position of organising lecturer under New Zealand Alliance. Though-- he strongly sympathises with the temperance movement, he does not think that he would be justified in making it the one object in life.
A civil servant down Wellington way had to pinch himself the other morning to make sure that he was alive. For he found the newspaper announced that the Government had decided to pay a compassionate allowance to his widow ! It turned out to be a press muddle of the fact that in connection with his retirement from the civil service he was to be allowed compensation.

The relations between two Wellington lawyers are so strained that in a case in the Supreme Court the other day one of them accused the other of peeping over his shoulder at his private notes, and asking questions in cross-examination upon what he there saw. The same day one of them called his friend a blanked blackguard, trusting to the Judge's hard hearing to prevent him from being brought to book.
Young Auckland got home last Satur* day over the inter provincial football match. The manager of the branch is an old Canterbury boy, and he wanted to show his patriotism by backing the Cantaba for a fiver. He explained the matter to the offjce youth, and told him to 'pat it on with the bookmakers. 1 The*youtb, loyal to Auckland, accepted the wager himself, and confidently told his employer that tbd bookmakers had gone but that a friend had accepted the wager. And laat Sunday the yonng man and his best girl had a redil good time at Onehtmga.
