Auckla-Nders have for a long time past been looking forward with pleasurable anticipation to 'Trilby,' which is to be staged here next week by the WilliamsonMnsgrove Company, commencing on Monday evening at the Opera House. ' Trilby ' is such a well-known novtl by this time that half the population will surely have come interest in seeing the dramatisation of Da Manner's famous book. The com pany which is about to play it here is an all-round excellent one. Williamson and Musgrove arranged with Messrs Palmer and Brady, of New York, for a company to be sent out to Anstralia, most of whose members were the originals in the first productions of the play in America. Miss Edith Crane, who takes the title role, is described as the ' living image ' of Mary Anderson, and has having all her methods, as well as her voice and figure ; and she is said to be far and away the best interpreter of the 7 ole of ' Trilby.' Mr Reuben Fax, as Svengali, has -set all Australia talking and wondering. His interpretation is said to be the most realistic bit of character ever seen on the colonial stage, and not likely ever to be forgotten. He has played Svengali over 300 times in America. Mr G. H. Trader, who fills the part of Zou Zou, a delightful light comedy character, is described as one of the best light comedians in the btates. His style resembles very much that of Mx Boucicault. Another excellently -played part should be that of Gecko, undertaken by Mr E. W. Morrison, whose American career ha 3 extended over eight years. Madame Vinard is played by Miss Jennie Reiffarth, who is one of the best-known actresses in America Mr Hubert Carr has how played Taffy over 350 times, his fine presence and sonorous voice being particularly adapted to this picturesque part. The Laird is undertaken by Mr Charles Canfield, and Mr George Webster plays Little Billee. The season only lasts five nights. The box plan is open to-day (Thursday). An adaptation of Mrs Henry Woods' renowned novel, ' East Lynne,' will occupy the stage of the Opera House on next Friday and Saturday evenings. The cast, which has been carefully selected, includes the lady and gentlemen amateurs who successfully performed in the comedy 'My Sweetheart ' some time ago. The services of Misb Marie D' Alton, who will assume the role of Lady Isabel, and Miss Hettie Howarde, who will have charge of the comedy element and the part of the old maid Cornelia Carlyle, have been retained. The drama has been in active rehearsal for some time past, and a competent performance is assured. The proceeds of the entertainment will go to swell the funds of the Auckland Ladies' Benevolent Society. The prices of admission are very moderate, and the production should be both artistically and financially successful. Owing to the Opera House being engaged for some weeks, it will be impossible to extend the season to more than the two advertised nights. This (Thursday) evening the Auckland Ladies' Liederkranz will give their first concert, under the direction of Mr Arthur Towsey, assisted by Mons. de Willimoff and Mr G. A. Paque, L.A.M. The prices are 2s and Is. The Williamson and Musgrove Opera Company left for Sydney last Monday evening after a most successful tour of New Zealand. Their next stage rendezvous is Brisbane.
