A veby large congregation assembled in St. Paul's Church, Symond Street, on Monday afternoon to witness the nuptials of Mr Moncrief Murray McCallum, son of the Rev. A. McCallum of Lake Takapuna, to Miss Susie L. Gaudin, youngest daughter of Mr F. Gandin of Rocky Nook The ceremony was moat impressively performed by the Rev. Canon Nelson, the service being fully choral. A large choir was present under Mr Knight, organist, and the musical portion of the service was beautifully rendered. Several selections were played by the organist before the arrival of the bride, and at the close of the service the wedding march was brilliantly performed.
The bride was given away by her father and looked very sweet and winsome in a beautiful bridal gown of rich ivory brocaded silk, with long full train, which fell very gracefully from the waist. The bodice was made with pleated front, finished with a butterfly bow of silk and a long garland of orange blossoms, while the sleeves were made with short puff to above the elbow, thence tight to the cuff. She also wore a wreath of. orange blossoms, and prettily arranged tulle veil, and carried a very beautiful shower bouquet of choice flowers and feros, fastened with long loops of ribbons. Two bridesmaids were in attendance, Misses Jennie Kronfeld and Dora Johnson, both attired in charming frockß of soft pale green silk, made with smocked yokes and finished at the hem of the skirt with tucks, dainty pure white rustic chip hats trimmed with full rosettes of accordion-pleated chiffon and white ribbon strings, pretty white kid shoes and open-worked stockings, and each carried a beautiful basket of white freesias, snowdrops, etc., arranged with maiden-hair ferns and grasses, and finished with loops and ends of white ribbon. The bridegroom's gifts were pretty gold brooches, which they wore. The bridegroom was accompanied by Messrs R. fl. McCallnm (best man) Walter Gaudin and Alfred Baker, who acted as groomsmen. At the conclusion of the ceremony the bridal party drove to ' La Rocque,' the residence of the bride's parents, where they were entertained. A large and beautiful display of wedding gifts were on view, and greatly admired. Mr aud Mrs McCallum departed in the evening en route for the Waikato to spend their honeymoon.
Mrs Gaudin, mother of the bride, wore a handsome gown of black merveilleux and brocade, pretty fischu of real lace, and black and pink bonnet ; Mrs F. E. N. Gaudin looked very pretty in light check gown, trimmed with gobelin blue silk, and scylish white hat : • Mrs Davis, scyiish shot gown, hat wreathed with lilies of the valley ; Mrs Kronfeld, black satin skirt, dainty blouse of pale green silk, black lace hat trimmed with flowers ; Mrs Jas. Culpan, black silk gown, pretty black and pink bonnet ; Mrs Cossar, black satin gown, becoming black and mauve bonnet ; Mrs Steadman, pretty blue and black silk gown, black and yellow bonnet ; Mrs Pierce, black silk skirt, dainty blouse of striped shot silk, charming little bonnet ; Miss Cossar, pretty green costume ; Misses Holland (2), scylish fawn dresses trimmed with shot silk, hats to correspond, aud others.
The engagement is announced of Mr J. W. Preston, of the office staff of the Union S. S. Co. (Auckland branch), to Miss Carrie E. Nixon, daughter of Mr Thomas Nixon, Cambridge.
ThePonsonby ' At Home ' monthly dance took place on Friday evening, and, as usual, proved both sociable and enjoyable. Amongst the ladies present were Mrs J. li. The engagement ia recently announced of Mr H. E. Maude, of Gisborne, to Miss Evelyn Reeves, eldest daughter of Mr Andrew Reeves, of Tologa Bay.
The Catholic Institute was the scene of a very gay and festive gathering last Thursday evening, the occasion being a plain and fancy dress ball in connection with Miss Dunningham's adult and juvenile dancing classes, which proved in every way an immense success. The hall was beautifully decorated with bunting, kindly lent by Captain Bremer (H M.S. Ringdove). The leap-year ball which is to be given by the young lady members of the Ponsonby 'At Home,' on Sept 3rd, 'is exciting a good deal of interest in the Western suburb, and the function promises to be one of the most successful 6ocial events of the season. Misses Devore, Morrin, Langsford, Wallnutt, Butters, and Rathbone are the committee elected to carry out the arrangements, and no trouble is being spared on (heir part which will contribute the success or enjoyment of the evening.
A most successful leap-year ball was held in Mrs Sowerby's Hall on Tuesday evening, 18th inst About eighty couples were present, and dancing was kept up until two o'clock. The committee, consisting of Mesdames Raynes and Hart, Misses Hickson, Mendelssohn, Lonergan, Molloy, Courtney, and Knight, worked hard to ensure the succesß of the function, and deserve great credit. Misses Loneigan, Mendelssohn, and Mrs Raynes acted most efficiently as M C.'s, nothing being left undone on their part which would contribute to the pleasure and enjoyment of the dancers. Burkes band supplied exquisite music, and the supper, which was
provided by Mr Stillwell (Parnell) was all that could be wished. The ladies', costomes, on the whole, were extremely tasteful and pretty ; the scene presented to the onlookers was one of brightness and beauty. Amongst the many charming costumes worn were: — Mrs G-. Raynes, handsome yellow silk, beetle-wing trimming, white silk cloak, feather trimmings ; Mrs Howard looked charming in gold mirror satin, pearl trimming; Mrs W. Hart, elegant black silk gown, black jet trimming; Mrs Mathews looked nice in green gown, white silk cloak ; Mrs Schapp, lovely gown of gold silk ; Mrs Mendelssohn wore a handsome gown of black silk, point lace collar and cuffs, white silk shawl; Mrs A. Hart, elegant heliotrope silk gown ; Miss Winks, pretty costume of pale blue ; Miss W. Winks, pink, black velvet trimmings ; Miss Courtney wore a lovely gown of white satin ; Mrs Mouser, empire gown of white satin ; Miss K. Lonergan, pretty white silk gown ; Miss Basdown, creme gown ; Miss Speight, dainty creme gown ; Miss L. The fifth of the Dorothy Socials was held last Monday, August 17th, in St. George's Hall. This social was a leap-year social. The ladies' committee was Misses M. Reid, Bogers (2), C. Burke and J. Hatswell, and great credit is due to the ladies for the manner in which they carried out their duties. Songs were admirably snng b? Miss M. Reid, Miss Slaney. Messrs Alf Marriage, E. Youug and P. Meredith. About eighty couples danced to the music supplied by Alf Marriage's band, of which several encores were repeated. The arrangements were all that could be desired, and everything passed off most enjoyably. During the evening it was announced that the calico and fancy dress ball will take place in the Choral Hall on Friday, September 25th. Some very stylish dresses were worn by the ladies, of which I may mention Miss K. Lynch, who looked exceedingly well in canary silk relieved with black trimming, and wore a pretty creme opera cape; Miss Kendell looked well in black, relieved with pretty spray of red poppies ; Miss C. Burke looked very becoming in deep creme nunsveiling, creme satin, relieved with gold trimming; Miss M. Reid looked well in black, blue satin sleeves; Miss Rogers, pretty pale blue, with creme lace ; Miss J. Rogers, dainty creme nunsveiling and pale blue trimming; Miss M. Noonan, very becoming in white costume, relieved with white silk lace and canary sash; Miss E. Davidge, Onehunga, looked charming in creme minsveiling and deep creme satin sleeves ; Miss C. Noonan looked pretty in salmon pink nunsveiling trimmed with creme lace ; Miss H. Burke, stylish pale pink nunsveiling with black tulle trimmings.
