A.R.C. WINTER MEETING
The Meeting just ended, and which actually closed the local racing season, 1895-96, was a fitting farewell to sport till spring. The A.R.C., when they balance their books> will, I am sure, have reason to be well satisfied with the season's operations, and I should think the Meeting just over will be responsible for a very respectable share of the net profits. This last of the Nationals must, I think, be classed highest of any which preceded it. Seldom before, at any meeting, has there been seen competing a better class of horses — hurdlers and steeplechasers — and seldom, if ever, such all round big fields. And the actual racing was of such excellence that one now regrets all is over, and has a lingering desire to see such races run over again. However, the spring will soon come round, when plenty of racing will once more obtain. The actual receipts of the A.R.C. through the totalisator over the two days at the Ellerslie totalled £11,779 ; an increase of £1851 on the amount of last year's investments.
This increase is not peculiar to the A.R.C. or to Auckland, as throughout the season totalisator returns Save been showing increases throughout the Colony, a sign of increasing prosperity amongst turfites, and promising of a prosperous future to racing. I cannot conclude these notes without a word of praise to the A.R.C. and officials, to whom is due, in so great a meaanre, the success attained over the Winter Meeting.
