With large majorities against him at Hamilton East and Cambridge, it was somewhat of a surprise that Mr Cadman was victorious in his contest with Mr Coates for this seat. But Huntly proved loyal, and gave him a majority of more than a hundred, and with good majorities at Gordon Settlement, Kumihia (where every elector voted for him), at Newcastle North (where all were in his favour but three), at Bangiriri, at Te Aroha and Waiorongjmai and other places he effectually pulled up the lost ground, in spite of the influences of the squatting interest. In the end, the result was very close, and Waikato is assured of the services of a first-class member, than whom there is none better.
