Eden.

The expectation that Mr Mitchelson would win has been realised, and the electorate has a good man as representative, though his politics are very much against him. It waß a surprise to many tnat Mr Niccol made such a close fight of it. But it is just as well as it is. Most Liberals would prefer Mr Mitchelson, an acknowledged Conservative, to such a recent convert to the Liberal cause as Mr Niccol. Perhaps Mr Niccol is sincere in his newly-awakened Liberal convictions, and, if so, we hope ere many years have elapsed to see him in the House. He possesses most of the qualifications that are essential to a good member, and the opportunity will frequently occur betweeq now and the period of the next elections to show his sincerity. Mr Dargaville def Berved something better than third placei It was unfortunate that he was absent from town so long at the time the writs were issued, and probably this affected his prospects prejudicially, but we hope Eooner or later that he will return to his old love— a city constituency — and take their -voice and theirs alone concerning his claims upon the democratic party. Mr Dargaville has ably advocated the rights and interests of th 6 people in the past, and he is entitled to consideration at their hands in the future. Some of Mr Mitehelson's success in this election was unquestionably due to the energy and organisation of his secretary, Mr Hadrill, who worked assiduously to secure the return of Mb candidate. "
