Virtue its own Reward.
It is not often that police officers are complimented from the Supreme Court Bench, so that it is reasonable to assume that Mr Justice Conolly had good reason for speaking in such graceful terms of Detectives Chrystal and Grace as be did the" other day. His Honor's kindly, remarks will serve to emphasize the surprise so freely expressed in public that no recognition has yet been made. of the skill and assiduity which these officers displayed in bringing the murderer Scott to justice. Of course, in doing what they did, they did no more than their duty. But what incentive is there to even the faithful discharge of duty if special services such as these are to pass unnoticed by those in authority. Every man is stimulated in the discharge of duties of exceptional responsibility by the hope of distinction or emolument, and in an indifferently paid service like the police, where a man can so easily benefit himself at the cost of his duty, exceptional merit in cases of importance like that of the Waikomiti murder, should be specially rewarded. We recommend the Judge's remarks to the Government, and would add to the names of Detective Gbrystal and Grace that of MountedConstable Kelly.
