A.R.C. STEEPLECHASE MEETING

THE GREAT NORTHERN STEEPLE-

CHASE.

Final Tips.

As the heavy rains last week necessitated the postponement of the A.B.C. Winter Meeting, the Great Northern Steeplechase will not be run till nest Saturday, the 10th inst. In my review of this race last week I chose Norton as the probable winner. The change in the weather, and further developements on the training tracks have altered somewhat the complexion of the race under notice! All these things render the task of unearthing the winner a difficult one. Of all the horses on the track Norton appears to have done the least work. Yet still, his connections are wide-awake ones and know what they are about. At the same time, taking this and the heavy state of the course into consideration, I am constrained to depose him from the position I gave him last week. Chester, who has been voted outclassed, may not be brilliant, but he is a good fencer and a stayer. In this race it is not altogether a question of the fleetest. I cannot recommend Waterbury after his backing displays. Of Williamson's pair I take Shillelagh to be the best though I do not fancy his chance greatly. I discarded Booties last week, but, ' circumstances alter cases,' and as this race is pretty Bure to be a slow run one, he Bhould have a chance &b he is a sure jumper. It seems likely this horse will start favorite. Of Tiritea, I know his conneotions think highly of his chance. He is a clever jumper and very fit. Scaltheen is very well and has a light weight ; however he has a habit of running down his fences, I don't like. Still I look upon him as a good outsider. Of Stenning's pair I would prefer Mangere's chance if brought fit to the post. Of the rest Deceiver on his Takapuna form should run well up. To sum up my final tip is

Chester . . ... . . 1 Tiritea .. .. ..2 Booties .. .. ..3
