TO WAI (BAY OF ISLANDS).
A promenade concert held in the schoolroom in aid of funds to build a public hall in tins disrict, was not as great a success as the promoters could have wished, financially. The weather was ba<l, otherwise the entertainment passed off well. Our member, Mr Hewston, was present, and
gave a recitation taken from Roman history, and this, although of first-class merit, passed over the beads of most of the people present. Later on he publicly announced Mr Ballance's death. The MLC. spoke a few words very feelingly of Mr Ballance's aims and objects for the good of the people, and was listened to with marked respect. Mr Brydon gave a Scotch reading, well rendered and highly appreciated. Mrs Patterson and Miss E. Seeds singing was very good. Messrs Oondon, Ferguson and Brown's songs were well received. I notice a wonderful improvement in the tone of our entertainments. Mr Brown, senr., made a first-class M.C., and kept things lively until da.ylight:
