(To THE BdITOK.) Sir, — Now that technical . education is being discussed, it should be encouraged, because there is no doubt as to its value. I was reading only the other day the reason why German immigrants are preferred over Britishers in the United States factories and workshops, simply because they all had a technical education of some kind in the Vaterland. People say if technical education is introduced into the curriculum something else will have to be cut down. By all means, I say ; our education is too literary, not practical enough. Wield tbe chopper amorig those abominable catch sums useless long-drawn puzzles — the sources of more headache and tears than enough. What possible benefits can ever accrue to youngsters who are compelled to worry over vile unpractical sums that would never occur in their daily life if they lived to be a thousand — veritable stones of Sisyphus— constructed in the manner most calculated to puzzle and worry— and -which they forget as soon as they are out of school. Verily, some people's idea of teaching should be' called the (hydraulic) ram method, which forces in anything good, bad, or indifferent, quite regardless of its utility or benefit to the child, or whether it jumps out agtin or not as soon as the pressure is removed. Mis-s Amy Vcughan was favoured with a larg- audience on Saturday night, in the Academy of Music. The performance was a remarkably good one throughout.
