The Police to the Rescue.
But, hark ! what was that ? There was a terrible thundering on our verandah top, and we risked stray eggs and polonies and gazed out. It was the police. The small boys were endeavouring to hoist a bobby with the proportions of a pork butcher a*) the verandah-post. Our own staff of gamins were on guard on the parapet, though, and, dropping on the shoulders of the corpulent ' cop,' they brought him down flop. This was a diversion, and we mentally promised those boys a rise in their wages. The limelight banged and cracked and fizzed again, the limelightman's careworn expression gave place to a sudden radiance of joy, and the gloonjy look of despair that had^ settled on the face of the lantern man disappeared, as if by magic. ' It's all right now,' they chorused, and. the boys took up the cry outside.
