*** While desirous of allowing all fair latitude in the insertion of country gossip, we wish correspondents would mate a rule of sending nothing which is likely to prove offensive to individuals. We make every endeavour to strike out items which seem objectionab c, and to assist; us in this, we would like if all who are annoyed by references in these columns would write to u% when we shall see that nothing likely to offend them is allowed to appear in future. The Observer's object is to entertain and amuse — never to offend either in feeling or taste*
