The City Council and the Gas Company.
'AH things come round to him who will but wait.' Last year, Auckland Gas Company took advantage of the unfortunate mistake of Assessor Gulliver, and refused to pay local rates on about £2000 worth of its property, payment of which had been evaded for a term of years. Now the tables are turned, for Mr Gulliver's new assessments show an addition of about £4000 to the Gas Coy.'s valuation. Of course the Company may appeal against this valuation, but I fancy it has very little hope ' of succeeding in its appeal. The valuable concessions and monopolies wbich it enjoys, the big profits whioh it makes out of the public, and its sharp practice in evading rates in the past which were justly due, will make the Court very chary of granting a reduction of valuation. Verily, the Company is now in the power of the Corporation, and it ought not to be set free until it has paid the uttermost farthing of the past rates of which the public purse was defrauded. It would be perfectly allowable, in most men's opinion, to steal .'from a thief i the Assessment Court may even recognise some equity in that practice.
