ROUND THE CHURCHES.

Rev. Db Adlejb, the lately deceased chief Babbi, left a little fortune of .£5759. The annuul meetings of Church of Ensrland nonpregattons are near at hand. St. Matthew's stone church vestry is to be thrown out, Primitive Methodist District Meeting is now being; held in Auckland ; streets swarming with lanky parsons wee Davie right in it. Selah. Rev. Percy Smallfield, who was a teacher before he was a parson, has gone back to his first love and at the end of the vacation will start teaching at St. John a College, Tamaki. Mr Smallfiold has there a large neia for his talents. St. Paul Nelson has heen having a slap at brazen trumpets, big drums, and blatant, noisy religion generally: He also condemns formal palls and afternoon teas as anti- Christian. This is rather strong talk for the Bishop's Chaplain, as he has to dance attendance at garden parties frequently. In two Auckland churches, where the inoome weekly falls far short of the expenditure, the parsons have been granted long leave of absence. It is hoped that the change will result in more ' change ' finding its way into the plate, and that absence will make the hearts of the people grow fonder towards their beloved pastors. City Missionaby MacPhebson will give his annual report at St. James's Hall this (Thursday) evening. Rev. E Scott West is to preside, and several clergymen and others will give addresses. Mr MacPherson s report is always an interesting document-a record of good work done amongst the class most requiring it.
